Comments (2)In my area there were many homes built with the same detailing at the same time so local salvage and antique shops often have house pieces. Local salvage in your area might have the iron insert from another home built at the same time. I don't know exactly what kind of damage you have to the cast iron but if you're going to paint it, I've had excellent results using auto body filler (the kind you mix on site) to recreate missing pieces and repair cast iron. After it cures it can be sanded to create a seamless repair. I found Bondo is better than the cheap stuff sold in HD....See MoreVictorian Living Room Ideas
Comments (9)It's difficult for me to see the space -- lighter photos and from additional angles would help. In fact, removing everything other than sofas (for scale) would help a lot to see what you have to work with as far as furniture arrangement goes. It looks like the tall cabinet between the windows is a built-in, but if it could move to the wall where TV is currently, it would be great. Is there a mantle and fireplace near the xmas tree, and a lovely high window on each end? Looks like maybe the newel post for a staircase near one of the sofas? Will you continue the crown molding into the foyer? To me it looks odd to limit it to one room. Also, the crown molding on the tall cabinet seems like it should be the same color as the crown for the room. I would suggest that you paint the dark woodwork the same white as the rest of you trim (I know, I know...) and keep the venetian plaster and ceiling colors very close. For me (admittedly not a Victorian), the contrast lowers the ceiling rather than accenting it in a harmonious way....See MoreHelp choosing colors w/ natural brick fireplace in Victorian home
Comments (14)@leelee, LOL, yes the red/orange color is the color I'd be covering up. :) @celerygirl, thank you for doing that! That was really helpful and took your tip and tried this on the BM site as well! I am agreeing with you all that the lighter neutral color would work best. Here are the colors I've narrowed it down to that look good with BM Gray Mirage: BM 2146-60 November Rain BM HC-80 Bleeker Beige BM HC-173 Edgecomb Gray SW 7738 Cargo Pants (will need to compare the paint chip to BM Gray Mirage to be sure but looks good from what I can tell) If you have any thoughts on these 3 colors (or any others), I would love to hear them since I am absolutely horrible at picking out colors and have made some costly and timely mistakes in the past. You guys are great! Thanks again!...See MoreIdeas for what to do with oak fireplace
Comments (8)I'm usually the person who says " don't paint wood... " But not this time. I'd remove the wood, and donate it. or add some wood to the too skinny pilasters, and paint, until I could find a design to fit the aesthetic. this is really wrong... the dentil molding doesn't work either the modern fireplace box and surround. don't do anything til you have a good handle on what you want for the room. btw, what does the rest of the room look like? is it what you like?...See Morecalidesign
