Mismatched Kitchen Counter-tops
Comments (35)Heatheron40, very nice. I asked a question about doing a tile countertop in our guest cabin recently as I feel like the look would complement the cabin aesthetic. Also I’m dying to learn to tile and thought it would be a fun place to start as it’s not an everyday space and I could take my time. Most of the responses were against. Basically stating the grout would make me crazy. The guy at the said what you’re saying I think, he said that modern grouts are more resistant to staining and such, and also to go with a tinted grout of some sort. I love your use of pattern to give it interest and intention!...See More6 x 10' kitchen remodel - need ideas!
Comments (38)I recently helped a friend's dad redo his tiny condo kitchen in Seattle but his seems palatial compared to yours. = ) I love the idea of a U kitchen but yes, your dining area's orientation poses a challenge. If your floor extends into the closet and you're open to moving/reconfiguring your closet storage, creating a banquette where the existing closet is would make it possible for you to go with the U lay-out suggested above. This is a rough idea what I'm proposing. I've got a nasty cold so my brain is a bit mushy but I think you'll have about 36" between table and fridge door with your table overhanging a 28" deep bench (deeper to accommodate cabs above) by 4". (estimated fridge depth at 27" to door face.) I'm proposing that you add drawers to the bench and cabinets above to make up storage lost in the closet's smaller size. You could open up the wall between banquette and entry like this: The relocated closet can be a closet or it could be a cabinet made to fit your storage needs. Take it to the ceiling to really boost your storage capacity....See More3cm quartz countertop overhang needs supported over 10"?
Comments (14)Mark_rachel, its only 12" because there is door to my backyard to the right of it and a wall that juts out behind it that would create a bottleneck if the island is too big. That's the most I can have without blocking traffic. When it was designed I wanted a full two feet behind the sink so my kids could sit there without their stuff falling in the sink. It was decided to put cabinets in the back for a little extra storage without the need for extra support. I would love to have a slightly bigger overhang but I don't have to room and yes, I want the best I can get for my money. If you could have the exact same countertop for $2200 vs. $4500 isn't that the way you would go? I'm bucking at the supports because that is what the back cabinets were put there for, supports are going to get in the way of the doors. Mainenell, that's an interesting idea! It would require adapting the back cabinets though or it would block the doors opening. Weedmeister, thanks for the warning. It is firmly bolted in. My husband built the base on site because this house is old and the floor decidedly unlevel....See MoreKitchen configuration questions (fridge, counter top clearance)
Comments (31)In terms of overall length, I have from left to right: 48" Freezer(18")/Fridge(30") 3/4 inch side cover panel 120" counter top, therein 36" induction cook top 3/4 inch side cover panel 30" wall ovens 48" pantry (2x24" high cabinets) 2" cover panel to the wall = 249.5" Total I've been going back and forth on the hood. It's probably the most discussed item. Originally we planned to get a custom hood liner built for an insert hood, but now we are leaning towards this very basic BOSCH pull out hood. Minimum mounting clearance over cooktop is 25 3/5". There is no maximum clearance given in the spec sheets. It should come in right around 30-32" clearance (math: 84" tall cab (incl. toe kick) - 36" base cabinets - 15" wall cab to mount the hood to - 2" for the hood hardware = 31"), which is very average as far as I can tell. I was planning to build a custom open cabinet left and right of the hood cabinet which will probably be around 16-17" high to seamlessly integrate the pull-out. See inspiration below....See Morelive_wire_oak
