I"m SO confused on whether my duct work is ok for hood vent

Hello, long story short replacing a over the range microwave with a range hood vent. Upon removing the hood vent, I discovered there IS in fact duct work in the wall, I'm attaching a picture for relevance.

I didn't expect there to be ductwork because my microwave never vented, but it may not have been installed properly. I was happy to see it was there, but here is the thing. You see the hole where the duct work is? It goes DOWN from there, not up. It then seems to elbow at floor height and go out the back of my house.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do in order to be able to install a ducted wall mounted range hood vent there in that space? I can't get an answer from anyone I"m trying to purchase vents from - like zline for example. I'm not sure if the hole needs to go up, more ductwork added, nothing. Help!
