Comments (3)This is such a new product, you're probably not going to find much of anyone with any experience. Even the Vent-A-Hood website doesn't have much information yet. The product is attracting some attention in the trade press, but most of that is from the Vent-A-Hood PR Department You can see a Vent-A-Hood video on the product on YouTube. See the link below. From the video, the design seems plausible, and perhaps more effective than competing products...but it does look complicated, and looks as though you'll need to buy and replace filters, which probably aren't cheap. Comments (16)I want to echo Weed's caution about being sure on code compliance when having your vent going out near that window. Last year, when I was doing a re-routed of the vent on my range hood, the local building inspector happened by. (We are on pretty good terms so there was no compliance issue.) I asked him about the rules and got a long dissertation as he handed vent tubing up to me. The gist of it was that the rules for range hood vents are different than for those that directly vent gas appliances (say a water heater power vent). There is some discretion when it comes to venting from a range hood over a gas stove. How far the vent has to be from an opening window also varies with whether the vent is above the opening window, at window level or below window level. I was told the vent that is above an opening window can be closer than one at or below window level. Comments (16)One would have expected Prestige to provide some advice, but without it, I recommend you match six-inch vents with six-inch ducts. Larger ducting reduces resistance but also slows down the air velocity. Commercial ducting requires 2000 ft per min air velocity to limit the amount of grease that will condense. According to some sources I've read, residential velocities should aim for the 1000 to 2000 ft per min range. The two six-inch vents can be merged into a duct with the same cross-section, around 8-inches, but only if both power packs are powered at the same time. Comments (50)I have a viking 30 inch vdsc that has been installed for about a year and a half and am happy with it. I chose this range because I wanted a black range and I wanted dual fuel, we have to use a lp tank and did not want to have both the range top and oven dependent on the tank. I am a cook-something-quick-and-easy-that-my-picky-kids-and-picky-husband-will-eat-5-days-a-week cook so did not need a super high powered cook top, I almost never go above med-high. I do use the simmer a lot and it is not the best so I bought a simmer plate to help get an evenly low cooking surface. The burners are closed and have been very easy to clean but I have not had any overflows or cooking mishaps that would get anywhere near that part of the burners. The black, shiny surface that is below the grates of the viking does show every little bit of dirt and I do clean it frequently using soap and water and a dry rag to buff out water streaks. The oven seems to take a bit longer to preheat than my old stove and because it uses the broiler to help preheat you cannot stick items in before the preheat is done or you will burn the tops (I still sometimes put items in early but keep them on the bottom rack.) The oven also cooks a little differently than I am used to, cannot really explain how or why but it does leave most items moister which is nice.
