Newsweek fires journalist who reported Trump was golfing for Thanksgiv

dublinbay z6 (KS)

Update--especially for the Trumpsters who were so sure that the golfing story was a deliberate attempt by a journalist to "get" Trump.

Sorry -- no reason to hang your heads and cry at how much trumpsters are mistreated by the mainstream press.

----------------------------------------

" Newsweek reporter who wrote that Donald Trump would spend Thanksgiving ‘tweeting, golfing, and more’ - hours before he touched down in a surprise visit to US troops in Afghanistan - has been fired.

The visit was kept highly secret for the president’s safety, and his public schedule said he would be at his Mar-a-Lago hotel in Florida on the holiday, where he would make calls to selected military members.

That led to an article being published in Newsweek based on apparent speculation, saying Mr Trump would likely spend the day on the golf course, and firing out missives on Twitter.

The error was quickly seized upon by Donald Trump Jr who posted a screenshot of the article with the caption: “Fake news gonna fake!”.

His father retweeted it shortly afterwards, commenting: “I thought Newsweek was out of business?”

The story was later updated, with the news organisation adding a note of their edits at the end of the article. The reporter, Jessica Kwong, has since had her employment terminated.

[. . .]

"The story has been corrected, and the journalist responsible has been terminated. We will continue to review our processes and, if required, take further action.”

[. . .]

Ms Kwong posted shortly after the correction was made: “Deleting this tweet because it was written before knowing about the president’s surprise visit to Afghanistan - an honest mistake. Story has already been updated, as shown in the screenshot.”

Pouf! The big story just disappeared. Move on, folks. Nothing more to see here--or complain about.

Perhaps she should write a story, instead, about all the money and time wasted golfing that could have been spent far better, actually working for the people.

That's above her pay level and intelligence. She couldn't make it posting viral gossip for a content farm.

Oops! Honest mistake!

It was pure speculation and her article said so. Like I said on another thread her mistake was stating the title and tweet as fact. Honest mistake? Honestly stupid.

Yes, food--the article said it was "pure speculation" -- based probably on the official schedule that said he was spending the day at Mar-a-lago.

What you failed to point out, food, is that the writer of an article typically does NOT write the title/headline for the article. Methinks there is an editor lurking in the halls there who should have been fired instead--since the misleading error was in the title/headline.

As far as the article itself goes, did it ever occur to some of you that sometimes an "honest error" really is an "honest error"?

A novice journalist sacrificed on the TRUMPSTER ALTAR of POLITICAL CORRECTNESS!

Kate, I did not consider that she might not have written the title. If that’s the case it could have been her defense, had she not implicitly approved it with her tweet.

"Novice"? The woman has been a full-time professional reporter since she graduated from college (2010). Hardly a novice.

But she's a woman, elvis! We must lower our expectation and shield her from all consequences.

Yes, so odd--a strong and competent woman and the first thought is to label her a victim and a novice.

Bring home the bacon and fry it up in the pan--you bet your bippy! Not.

Again, magically it has nothing to do with the poor female, who is a victim of circumstances.

Ladies. aim higher.

The press isn't supposed to rubber stamp the news. They are supposed to investigate and report it.

Newsweek isn't a stupid personal blog.

My error--I thought I had read that she was relatively young and inexperienced. Must have been something else I was reading.

Doesn't change the very real possibility that an "honest error" could honestly be an "honest error," however.

Kwong was lazy and presumptive and most of all, she was just doing her part, being a card-carrying member of the hate-Trump media. This is how low the bar has been set by "the resistance".

At least she didn't lie about her education and experience to get a job with the state department like Mina Chang. Why no outrage about her lies?

And it took her almost a week to resign.

Lol, did I hit a nerve? Nah, I like this thread as it nicely highlights the hypocrisy of selective outrage. And you don't get to tell me where to post, sorry.

Newsweek fired her. Those raving lunatics on Fox are at it day in, day out.

Ladies, aim at your own news sources. You don’t even know the basics about the current charges against your idol.

Ladies, you still believe the lying statement Barr gave a month before the mueller report came out and babble “no obstruction”.

Ladies, you still think Obama spied on trump.

Dems, stop playing defense. Just stop.

And I still maintain that it still may come down to an honest mistake.

Since you have no proof of what actually motivated the writer, your inability to consider all the possible options--such as, she made an honest mistake--just might indicate the limitations and/or biases of your position you are having so much fun insisting on.

Kate, then certainly Kwong can defend herself and lay out a case whereby she had bad intel, or was tricked, or whatever. She's fired because she was lazy and lacked integrity.

Has Kwong defended her actions and if not, why are you doing it for her?

She'll no doubt find another paycheck working for some content farm, which is about the caliber she's producing.

You could say she is a victim of believing White house? They did say that he would be at Mar a lago and if he was there he would be golfing right? Thing is this is a tempest in a teapot. She is paying the price of not getting back up intel. A learning moment. Never believe the White House? You could easily make that point.

What's remarkable is that Trump played the "resistance" media, knowing they don't practice journalism, and instead, practice hate-Trump activism. Trump knew they'd run with the story without any investigation or verification.

He supplied the rope, and they did the rest.
