LOL, sorry Carro, couldn't help myself with the title.

Anyway, I saw this on a Jimmy Dore (it was really good) segment. His language is a bit stronger? so here is an article instead.

I found this to be an interesting way of doing things. Even though it is government run, it is still run by the people. Hm, the government working for the people. Weird.

This is awesome, and apparently government in other communities across the nation have stepped in to ensure the populace has fresh food. As a senior I am fortunate to have a family run full-scale grocer two blocks away, otherwise I would have to take a bus to the grocery store, Good on the community government of Bowman!

But it isn't scary. I do agree that you can't enforce these programs federally. It's too hard and too diverse. On local levels, it works so much better.

I can sit here in all my comfort fighting those who have less but where would that get me? I'm in the same position, well, with others get less and less. This is another option given to this community. They are getting benefits that are probably saving their lives and making life that much easier. This is scary? That's insane.

"But is this simply part of the order of nature? Is it because this land of ours is so poor that it cannot afford a decent life to those who dwell upon it? No, comrades, a thousand times no! The soil of England is fertile, its climate is good, it is capable of affording food in abundance to an enormously greater number of animals than now inhabit it. This single farm of ours would support a dozen horses, twenty cows, hundreds of sheep−and all of them living in a comfort and a dignity that are now almost beyond our imagining. Why then do we continue in this miserable condition? Because nearly the whole of the produce of our labour is stolen from us by human beings. There, comrades, is the answer to all our problems. It is summed up in a single word−Man. Man is the only real enemy we have. Remove Man from the scene, and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished for ever."

"The National League of Cities has not researched government-run grocery stores, so had no information offer about whether other U.S. cities took that approach to food deserts, a spokesman said. Lynn Tipton, the Florida League of Cities university director, said she was unaware of another Florida town having done so.

Shelly Ver Ploeg, food assistance branch chief for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service, said she also did not know of another town running its own grocery store. But she said she appreciated Baldwin’s innovation.

“I love the story of this town. They are very resourceful,” Ver Ploeg said.

Lynch said research done by Baldwin resident Alice Sapp Bowen found Baldwin was alone in its approach. Bowen, who maintains the All About Baldwin Facebook page, wrote on the closed-group page, “The town owns and has taken the financial risk to provide us with an option ... This is truly a first that can be said to be ‘only in Baldwin.’ I am hometown proud.” Lynch provided her post to the Times-Union."

This isn't about free food for everyone. This is about a program that is working for a community. It is not for an entire system to adopt. The healthcare issue should have its own thread. Plus, I don't think you have to worry (personally) about your healthcare. Both parties are working hard to keep anyone who might adopt this policy out.

Regarding Walmart and water. Yes, this is what all businesses who have the means should be doing in a community that is facing a crisis. Along with the people who have the ability to help others.

It's like if I see someone in a wheelchair stuck. Should I wait for the police to come and help them? No, I stop my car and provide some aid. It's common sense and just decent.

I would imagine the small population caused a major (?) chain to pull out. The days of mom and pop groceries is past, small communities have to be mobile (cars) to purchase goods/foods elsewhere. Rural clinics are also pretty much closing up shop, and if you need a specialist look to drive some distance.

I no longer drive and/or have a car so rural living would not work for me.

Sixty-two percent of American households now have Amazon Prime accounts. That's crazy. No wonder their prices have gone up. I find Amazon these days to be a second-rate source, anyway. I wanted to buy a particular cat-scratching post (best one out there!) as a back-up for the one I originally bought on Amazon. I was told that that product was only available to Amazon Prime customers now. I bought it from Chewy instead, for less. Resist tyranny!

I agree. I think it will depend on population and if the town starts to prosper. I don't necessarily know if this is a thrive or fail situation. I mean, if the town dwindles, the store will downsize accordingly and if it thrives then the grocery stores come back? I do applaud the mayor for taking steps for the citizens in his community though.

For the record, IGA is my go-to grocery store in my town. Occasionally I also go to Walmart's neighborhood grocery store because it is larger and carries a few items I can't get at IGA, but it is farther away, and it gets tiresome trudging through all the additional aisles to locate a few additional items.

Kudos to the citizens of Bowman!

Per Attachment on thread heading:

"The store is a business, not a nonprofit. The goal is not to make a profit, but to make sure residents have access to fresh food, Lynch said. The council took $150,000 from a reserve fund to hire staff, pay food vendors and rehab the refrigeration system and it plans to repay the money in monthly installments. After the debt is paid, profits will be plowed back into the business, he said." Nothing wrong with a loan.

Sales have been exceeding the $3500 per day projections. No, not in the article but the information is there to be found.

And, leona, I really thought it was an interesting concept.

What does it have to do with socialism? The butcher wouldn't have a luxury of setting up his own prices because
he would be working for the fed gov owned slaughter house. Same for veg and dairy farmers.

Socialism has only federal gov owned properties, all expenses are financed from the centralized fed gov budget and this budget is constituted by > 80% of personal income taxes. And the fed gov set up prices. On everything, groceries and else.

Having a police dpt/library ran on a tax money doesn't fall under socialist agenda. It's the ability of the highly developed society to organize a social system for comfortable and regulated living.

Catch up on the concept of socialism, OP.

Cookie, I like Jimmy More. Do you have a link to the show this was on handy, or a date? I tried reading the article but there are so many flashing and blinking ads, I couldn't finish it.

It sounds like a great idea. Many small, rural communities rely on the Dollar Store for their groceries. The Bowman store offering locally grown meat and produce enriches and strengthens the whole community. It reminds me of community supported agriculture - CSA's, and now around here there are TSA's - Tribal Supported Agriculture intended primarily for tribal members. We get 95% of our food from the local food co-ops which offer locally grown and packaged products shipped in from a distance.

Not sure why people don't get that we are the government and we have a say in how things are done with government programs. I like that far more than depending on the whims of private business, especially for basic necessities.

True, Trump believes that--or at least wishes that were true. And keeps trying to make that true.

Hay believes that also?

The rest of us are aware that government refers to the three branches: executive, congressional, judicial, all the bureaucracy in D.C. (the size of a decent-sized town)--cabinet positions and all the underlings, the Constitution, the Pentagon, the Department of Justice, of Homeland Security, of Commerce, of Education, etc., etc., etc.

That is what Trump and a lot of his Trumpsters miss--he alone is not the government; he is not a king or emperor or dictator, etc.

We've lived for millions and millions of years in little tribes. That's when it made sense. Those days are long gone.

You keep trying to bring it back because it's so deeply instilled into your psyche.

That's the nature of evolution. Just pack on more stuff onto the old stuff and hope the old stuff wears away.

It takes time.

Survival of the fittest will take care of it in time.

"The mayor of Baldwin - he did good. "

On the road to Wasteville.

I love that he's going to take a business that couldn't make a profit, turn it over to the government and they're now going to make a profit.

The stuff of Fairy Tales.

Just call it "free" when you give some of it back to them and they'll keep voting you in year after year.

Yes, indeed, no problem too large that can't be fixed with someone else's money.

"Walmart got the water to the Texas Hurricane survivors when they needed it.

Not government.

Hay"

How nice of Walmart to use their vast wealth to supply a basic necessity to people during an emergency. Have they continued to supply the water, or has that responsibility gone back to the municipalities?

Usually, I assume Walmart sells water. Do they have their water manufactured in China and shipped to the U.S.? Nope. Water is a widely available natural resource they mine and then sell at inflated rates. When rain falls, it doesn't fall only on one or two socioeconomic groups, it falls generally on everyone. Mother Nature is Socialist at heart. It is exploitive people who try to privatize and profit off resources that belong to all of us.

I'm pretty sure Jimmy Dore had something to say about politicians like Trump. You'll have to go over to Youtube and look it up though.

From Roman law, the Public Trust Doctrine: "By the law of nature these things are common to mankind -- the air, running water, the sea and consequently the shores of the sea.” (Emperor Justinian, Institutes, 2.1.1)

It is incorporated into the constitution of the State of California and was the basis for the landmark court ruling in 1983 that forced Los Angeles to stop stealing water from Mono Lake and to give it back. It is, in general, the basis or principle for public access and use laws in many states.

I guess providing bottles and transport of water is a "service", though the water itself belongs to all of us. But, there is also the principle of "beneficial use" (underpins California's water appropriation laws) that considers efficient, economic use of water as a benefit to society as a whole.

So, I tracked down the Jimmy Dore show. My goodness. News presented by a vulgar "comedian".

Reminds me of why I don't sit down next to the drunks at the bar.

That's the kind of nonsense you get from the drunk at the bar.

"When the rain falls, ...it generally falls on everyone". Right, buddy, whatever you say. Let me buy you another beer.

"News presented by a vulgar "comedian"."

Well, if the MSM won't report it, someone has to.

It's all good cattyles. Whether one thinks this is wrong or right (for one's beliefs) - it is still something to watch (how it plays out).

And when the costs start adding up, don't worry, it will be added to their taxes.
