How can I make my kitchen look more contemporary?New canisters?(p
Comments (32)I'll chime in as a fan of contemporary myself, and a not-so-much fan of country. Your kitchen definitely has a country look to it for reasons already posted. The natural color oak cabs unfortunately don't fall into any description of contemporary, but I would expect touching the cabs to be off the table. If you need canisters for practical reasons (e.g. storage), then consider stainless steel. I got a nice set from Costco for not much money, and Crate & Barrel also have nice ones. Your family room has a contemporary look to it (with the exception of the table lamp). If you look at the elements there in comparison to your kitchen, what you see are solid colors, clean lines, and a lack of nicknacks. Look at the window treatments in particular. Solid color valence, and solid color drapes. Also look at the artwork over the fireplace. Dramatic dark frame that matches the color of the fireplace below, complementary colors in the matting, and a repeating dark brown mat towards the inside. So ask yourself, "how do I bring these design themes to my kitchen?" Well, replace the window treatment with a solid color. I would recommend a dramatic color that matches some other elements in the room such as your counters. Vertical pleating such as you have now is more country. No pleating (like your window valence in the family room) or horizontal pleating (like in roman shades) are more contemporary. Although roman shades always have a summer beach house feel for me, but that's probably just me. For the stuff on top of the cabinets, you should replace them with repeating items in solid or repeating colors. For example you could use a dozen clear/colored art glass plates that again match the counters. The key here is to use multiples of the same item in the same or similar colors, whereas currently you have a mix of disparate items (plate, jug, basket, bottle, etc). Anyway you get the idea - repeating elements, repeating colors, simple lines, no clutter. Those things say "contemporary" to me. Good luck and I hope that helps a little....See MoreHow to match or make a couch look less green
Comments (4)I need a quick 101 on undertones to find a paint color that will work. One of the many problems with thinking about color in terms of undertones is the only thing you can do is subjectively "match" colors. The theory that you can color by undertones provides zero methodology for solving any kind of color conundrum past "matching" according to subjective undertones and/or not combining alleged undertones in unsavory combinations, like pink and yellow. So, while a lot of people talk a lot about undertones, no one discusses any sort of framework about how you're actually suppose to use them to solve complex color dilemmas like yours. Color Rule #1 is change the light and you change how the color looks. Color is light. Color and light are inextricably tied. Before you move on to choosing paint colors, you first need to assess the lighting situation. Neodymium (like Reveal), halogon and LED could all contribute to exaggerating the greeness of the sofa. Incandescents could help the sofa look more "yellowy beige". I would try changing light bulbs first and then move on to what can be done with wall color to help shift the sofa color more towards yellow and away from green....See Morehow do I make my paint look less blue !
Comments (21)I know the numbers. I also know that OP is not wrong because the numbers don't agree with her. She is seeing baby blue and it isn't because of lighting. It is because the color is blue. 10 years from now when the OP looks at her walls she will still see blue. If I were looking for a blue white which white would you suggest? I can look at the fan deck, know without a lick of analysis that Rhinestone is the bluest white. You won't find a white that measures bluer than Rhinestone, which is just barely over 10GY (144). CIE-L*Ch(ab) = 89.015 0.763 146.962° So given that none of the whites measure out as a blue white, most don't even get over a 5GY, so they are more yellow than green, does this mean the SW has only one or two cool whites and all the rest are warm whites and that they have no blue whites? To understand what is going to be seen by our OPs we have to go beyond the hue and note the Light and Chroma. The lower the Chroma the more neutral gray and the more gray the more people see blue. We perceive gray as blue. What I don't want is for this OP to be lulled into a feeling of safe or thinking that she is somehow flawed and unable to perceive color, but seeing blue for the next 10 years until she finally decides to paint again and this time picks a white with more saturation that doesn't look baby blue on her walls....See MoreHow can I make my gray paint less blue?
Comments (13)Angelo - have a look at the Colorography Lab at The Land of Color .com. I think you will find it very interesting. What is shared here, that you see little evidence of elsewhere, is that ALL paint colours readily available to us on the high street, belong to identifiable Hue Families. This includes all blacks, whites, greys, near neutrals, as well as more obviously colourful colours. See the Colorography Lab. That little nugget alone, would give us fair warning of what to look out for when testing a new paint colour in our space. That blueness you note is an inherent part of Etched Glass’ colour DNA....See Morejmarple04
