Unbalanced Living Room Solutions?
Comments (10)decoenthusiaste- I appreciate the advice and different outlook! Fortunately, our kitchen does stay very clean, and the space feels a bit constricted with that wall being up right now, so I do think it's going to have to go. One thought I did have though, was getting rid of all the couches and purchasing something modern that would fit three people. Nothing too oversized. Then, in the corner next to the fire place (by the window) a leather chair and lamp to serve as a "reading area." We were also thinking about adding bar stools to the peninsula, so have that serve as a congregation point. And / or, taking the niche caused by the closet, adding shiplap or reclaimed wood to its wall, and adding a floating table to act as a sitting area as well. I'm just not sure if that's the best use of its space, as it is relatively large....See MoreFireplace built ins - amount of space between shelves
Comments (6)You really must have adjustable/removeable shelves, not permanently affixed ones. Why? First of all, it's far easier/less expensive to paint adjustable/removable shelves that permanent ones. Second, all shelves are usually not the same distance apart, depending on the height of the books or the objects being displayed in them. My daughter bought a house with permanent shelving, and ended up not painting the stained shelve unit when she had the rest of the room (knotty pine) painted. It would have cost $1000 for a very narrow wall (about 11-12ft). Oh, how she has wished over the 20 years she's lived in that house, that these shelves were adjustable!...See MoreHow do I decorate these built-in shelves?
Comments (7)I drink wine, so I would put several wine racks in either side of the lowest cubbies. I wouldn't get fancy about it -- in fact, I would want to make the room more of a mix of informal and welcoming and sophisticated -- so I'd put in a bunch of these or whatever else fits and doesn't break the bank and spend the savings on better wine. ;) Middle shelf above the double door cabinet I'd put in crystal canisters or European ceramic or tines filled with after dinner candies, rock sugar treats and cookies -- like, a lot of them Then I think I would simplify my life and put 3 framed artworks to cover the upper shelves, hanging them over the shelves so that some of the shelves were still visible. These come in big sizes , But I might stick with a dark old fashioned rug because of your light fixtures (which I like) and the cabinetry...See More12ft ceilings...how tall should the built-in shelving go up?
Comments (12)If this is really being a built- in and all new I would do drawers on the lower not cabinets. Can be one piece front with hidden drawers inside. Why haven't they given you a 3D rendering? Hope you are all on the same page for look and finish of cabinetry. I would only go to 10 at the max. Here is a photo/visual to help (not really your ceiling type but very talk shelving)... once you have all those shelves you need to fill them... it really depends on how much you want to display, have visual "stuff" on that wall. I'm assuming tv is on the left, are those the connections for wires? Also, to keep in mind the sides are not symmetrical, just for keeping display items balanced. The more shelving, the more visual "stuff" to deal with. Looks like a beautiful space, it will be lovely when finished! Congratulations on your new home! Good luck!...See Morerddee
