Great mural. Nothing you could do is going to make the room look "boyish" with that on a wall :) My preference is always for blues, but if you daughter loves pink maybe that would be a poosibility. I don't like purples all that much (personal opinion only) and I just think purple with all that dark blue would look like one big bruise (my childhood was full of bruises).

One approach would be to think of that mural as 'art' and ignore it. Make the rest of the room white and pink/fuchsia of varying texture, then add in a few small royal blue and/or pink blue pattern touches. What are the current ceiling and floor like?

Fuscia will grow with her longer than pale pink as an added bonus.

No way anyone ever will mistake a unicorn mural with clouds to be boyish. Hopefully she likes it long enough she won’t want to be done with unicorns the next year. I would keep the other walls white, paint them blue or a pastel, then go for the pinks and purples with bedding. Kids preferences will change on a whim, and the kindergarten years are the most exaggerated in terms of wanting femme vs masculine stuff. Pink and navy are a popular combo now.

Nothing boyish there and I would hope that mural is easily removed next yeaar . I would do white walls and add the color of the year in bedding and maybe next time a huge cork board for the art of the moment. Kids change their favorite color often so maybe keep the mural wall as the one you change down the road then the white won’t need painting all the time That is what my Mom did with us.

Think of the blue as a night sky and almost any color will go. The unicorn in the mural is much more sophisticated than most of the bedding shown with cutesy unicorn designs. I would use the colors she likes but not add the really babyish unicorns or patterns.

She is yes FIVE. : ) No agony, it has a 36 month life span, then it's rock/hip hop posters.

You might consider choosing a pale pink/tan color -- not totally little girly but a nod to your daughter's favorite color -- pink.

I did read that but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to use patterns that are that juvenile unless the child really wants that.

Yes, my daughter is 5 and her whole world is nothing but unicorns/ponies. To be clear, when I asked her what SHE wanted for her birthday, she asked for a unicorn bedroom. I showed her several wallpapers and murals and SHE picked out the one I purchased.

For those suggesting white, I'm thinking that you don't hang around little kids that much White will last in her room for 1 day... and as she would say boring.

As for the nod to the younger kid unicorn theme - I wish! Everything resembling the "younger" theme she has turned her nose up at. (Perhaps she has the more "sophisticated" taste because she is the baby in the family.

In regards to the mural itself. Personally, I love wallpaper (of any kind). In moderation and I bet the amount of money I spent on it is no different in cost then the paint/ pictures/decor/furniture someone would have to pay to decorate that space.

OMG, Jan, LILY LAVENDER brings back memories! My daughter selected that color for her room when she was about 7 or 8. It is a very bright saturated color, and the room looked wonderful with all her white furniture. My husband hated it, but I told him it is her room and she should pick any color she wants. Funny enough, we just redid my daughter's room a few months ago and finally painted over the LL with a subtle gray. She's 30 and married now, but still was sad to see the LL go!

So let your daughter pick a color--give her 3 choices (any one of which you could live with) and let it go. It's just paint, and when she tires of it, you can just paint over it. I specified Ben Moore's "Frosted Rose" (044) for the young daughter of one of my clients, and it is a nice pink, not too bright but not mauve either.

Not a pro. My first thought was a shade of lavender or lilac.

Pearly pale pink walls-if she likes pink, white bedding, a few textured throw pillows-make your own covers using pictures of ponies/unicorns that she likes transferred onto fabric. My 17 year old niece still has the castle mural on her bedroom wall that she has had since she was 3. She wouldn't think of changing it.
