Need low budget tips for quick garden/grass
Comments (11):) shade is not a bad thing in the summer time- especially not in georgia! and honestly- many of my favorite plants like the shade. the cypresses are beautiful trees- but they might be safer in containers themselves- they do get big, and 13 of them is a grove suitable for a 5 acre plot, not a normal folks' house :) I like to joke that my back yard is about the size of my dad's living room- I'm exaggerating. it's maybe half that size... a 6 person table would take up the entire lawn, and the daylilies would be tickling our shoulders from the borders. so container plants for the party are perfect...you can learn to garden afterwards. the best way to learn? make friends with ever person on your street with a nice garden. offer to trade sweat for wisdom... most of us will jump at the chance for company...and send you home with cuttings suited to the area, taboot :) then, you can spend all winter reading, and drafting what you want to do with that yard...my plans will take five years to really come together, but I planned for that. and if my raised beds are edged with concrete broken in chunks from where they knocked down a building... the 6 ft section I have finished is so buried under sedums, rock cress, and lamium that you'd never know it ;)...See MoreNeed quick advice on Fannie Mae Homepath bid
Comments (33)mary: No, it's a white ceramic sink. The sink cabinet is coming out, to be replaced by a range, among other things in the kitchen remodel. You could tear this down, but it's in a neighborhood of 40-100K houses, so it wouldn't be smart financially. deke: I reported over in the Old House forum, but it looks mostly good. The section under the tile is unfinished, so it appears that previous owners put in the tile and then refinished the rest of the floor. The little hallway by the bedrooms has laminate over plywood, so I'm guessing there were water problems in the bathroom that ruined the hardwood there at some point. Bedroom floors are wood but have evidence of past glue-down something under the carpet. Kitchen has a couple layers of vinyl; I couldn't pull off enough without tools to see if there's anything decent underneath....See MoreRECIPE: Need Thanksgiving dinner help
Comments (27)We usually have 20+ at Thanksgiving and this is what works for me because I like to do as much as possible ahead: Buy 2 smallish (12-14lb) turkeys. Cheap turkeys are fine. The small ones go fast so look as soon as they go on sale. Cook one the day before and make your gravy. This is the "back up" turkey, for leftovers and possible seconds. Slice it and put it on a platter with some broth. Buy a spiral sliced ham. It will impress all those thinking turkey is the only meat and it is generally much appreciated. You can bake it in a crock pot if necessary or, even better, a roaster oven. Serve the second turkey hot from the oven and slice to order. Like a carving buffet! I have never had to use the turkey form the previous day because I also have the ham. However, it IS nice to have to give people leftovers to take home and, of course, the gravy is done. All the side dishes? Make your stuffing now and freeze. It reheats great. Mashed potatoes will keep warm for hours and cranberry sauce can be made 3 days ahead. Roll dough can be made the night before and baked that morning..or made earlier and frozen. Ok, I do get up really early and make pies because I like fresh pies, but the dough can be made 2 days before and kept in the refrigerator tightly wrapped. We like marinated asparagus..nice to have a cold vegetable made the day before. And I'm really blessed to have relatives who bring most everything else even if it is yucky...like green bean casserole. They like it though! And the best part- dh will clean while I cook....See MoreBefore Moving in to New Home Checklist of What to Do - Any Tips?
Comments (15)Bill, thanks so much for mentioning that floor installation may also include removal of old flooring - forgot about that - too many things to think of! Well, I think the deal is probably dead. The bank, or someone representing them, came back with a counter-offer for all parties of $115,900. I'm not budging. My first offer was $101,990 and was told to put in my best and highest offer, which I did at $105,900. I wrote a letter and wanted to include an attachment for pictures but was told the bank will only look at faxed papers, so had to forego the visual. I wrote the problems that I'm aware of, trying to keep it short and to the point and told "whoever" that with all the problems there was at least $40K worth of work that I know of, at a price of $115K I didn't feel that the price was warranted and asked that if they reconsider my offer to let me know. Hopefully, the listing agent will submit it. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be - maybe they'll come back to me if no one bids any higher or makes a better offer than I did - otherwise, it goes in foreclosure. Thanks all!...See MoreIrricca Brightharp
