Flooring Design Dilemma entry

Need to choose entryway tile that goes with other tile and wood floor.

Please help with what the fashion rules are for choosing an entryway tile.

The kitchen has been redone with a shiny 24x24 travertine style porcelain tile that I love.

The floors are white washed and have a little sheen.

We are redoing the entryway and also adding a 8 x 11 foot vestibule past the door. I chose a tile as a place to start but wondering if it is too linear.

This is a main artery in the house and you see all three at once from 4 different angles.

My question is can I go with a shiny tile? I like the luxury of the look.

Would this tile work - I would like to keep within the same wheelhouse but then I am concerned that it would look like I tried to hard to get them to match. My kitchen tile has been discontinued.

in the second and third photos, the kitchen tile looks cool, but in the first it looks warm. assuming the latter are correct, I think your choice would be great.

IMO the same as you used in the kitchen would be my choice I think flooring should not be a hot mess of different material

I think the only thing that wouldn't go well with that (plain white tile) would be something in a similar, but only slightly different color - a perfect match or a definitive contrast is always better than something that looks like you just couldn't find a match so went with the nearest thing. Carpet will look fine as will any wood, and I think what's more important is the colors in them vs the colors in the walls, and/or whether or not the tile is the only white thing in the whole adjoining area, especially if it's particularly dark.

Hmm. I'd sleep on it. See what bugs you more/draws you more. Go with your intuition. Put it in different spots. Look at it in different lights-morning, day, artificial lighting. Stop looking at them for several hours-and then look some more. Not easy I know. I choose my current flooring for a week minimum..gosh I was so silly I even took it next to my face and looked at both of us-me and floor sample lol-in the mirror..to see whether it flatters my complexion)) In the end I chose well, I love it. I'd say I love it madly. But to tell you the truth-if I picked something else, I'd probably like it too..) Because most of all I loved some flooring that we ordered-and were told it was discontinued. Daltile is very good at marking their boxes with the slippery factors. They call it either WCOF or COFW. The COF stands for coefficient of friction, so using the letters is good. There is also a dry COF which is indicated with DCOF or COFD. The numbers go from 0 to 1 with numbers above 0.5 being much better. You cannot simply look at a tile guess the friction coefficient. The tile we picked looks a little shiny but has a well deserved WCOF of .7. I found the following statement on the Home Depot website for a specific tile. DCOF greater than or equal to 0.42 slip-resistance meets requirements for use on dry, or wet, level floors, not recommended for shower floors due to tile size, all products manufactured by Daltile meet or exceed the requirements of the ANSI standard That is misleading at the very least. The DCOF is meaningless for wet surfaces. Look for the WCOF.

Well, painting our doors is taking much more time than anticipated! Partly bc we decided to take them off to lay flat and spray for a smoother finish. Plus my husband decided to work on building our shed yesterday so i had to wait for help on a few occasions. But we need a shed so that’s ok! Prep took forever bc the doors are not in great shape. And those darn windows! But I got both doors prepped and we sprayed 1 coat of primer on 1 door. But then couldn’t move it right away and then had to hang them before dark! So we will finish this weekend! I’ll post pics when done. Thank you!

First of all, I’ve been toying with the idea of adding a vestibule to the front of my home, so this project of yours is very intriguing to me! Moving on, since the current tiled entryway area is part of the room with the hardwood, replace that tile with the same wood. As for the vestibule flooring, will there be a door and/or significant change in elevation (i.e., a step) between the vestibule and the rest of the entry? If so, you could use tile in the vestibule. Would I recommend using the tile you’re thinking about using? Probably not, and for the very reason you’re concerned about—“that it would look like I tried to hard to get them to match.” But to know for sure, I’d really have to see the rest of your space and the plans for the vestibule, though my initial thought would be to use something completely different in shape, color and/or texture from the kitchen tile. For example, maybe use just those small hex tiles or perhaps use a charcoal/black tile.

Btw, have you considered enlarging the opening to the kitchen?

Hi, The shiney tiles can be slippery especially at an entry way where wet shoes come in. Get a sample and see if you slide them.
