A few years back, New Yorker writer Tony Hiss attended the ballet with Henny Youngman, a former profile subject turned friend. As the performance opened, a chorus line of women danced onto the stage, all on their tippy toes.

Turning to Hiss, Youngman said in a stage whisper, "Why didn't they just hire taller girls?"
