Regrets, serious edition
Comments (72)Blue! I haven't checked in here for a while and thought I'd see if anyone I knew was still posting. I saw your post and your dilema. First of all--hello! Good to hear from you! Secondly, I love your kitchen as is and am sorry you regret not getting all white cabs. I can understand how it feels to be talked out of something you wanted. I regret I didn't get the silgranite sink I wanted nor the blind corner cab pull outs that I was talked out of by my KD. Next time (if there ever is a next time) I will stick to my guns! So, if you are bent on changing your cabs, do so. Have them professionally sprayed. My opinion, for what it is worth, I LOVE your kitchen the way it is! I don't like the photoshop pictures at all. I think you may have a hard time matching the white cabs to the island and then your tile. It may be a bit too much white. Have you thought of other things you can do? I am not a fan of glazing but was thinking of taking out the inside panel of some of the doors and putting in opaque glass--maybe with a nice wavy or ridged pattern in it. That would be "white" without painting the entire cab white. It looks like you have no inside panel on the uppers by the sink and maybe carry that over to the stove area. Are the cut outs plain glass or wire or ??? It is hard to tell from the picture. In any case, I am sorry you have regrets. I hope you are able to resolve them. You might want to check out another designer than the one you used and pay him/her by the hour for some suggestions. Let us know what you decide. Sending you big hugs! You know, for those of us that remodeled in 2008, I think we should have a once a month reunion on here just to catch up with each other and see how our kitchens have progressed, loves and hates, etc. It would be fun! Lord knows I could use the support as I watch the value of my house slipping daily!...See MoreHelp with backsplash
Comments (19)If you guys don't mind, I need some more feedback. We talked to our builder's interior designer, and she suggested a color that hadn't even crossed my mind: WHITE.. She put the whole package together, and it actually didn't look so bad. However, I'm still a bit hesitant since we have no other white elements in our kitchen. Even the granite has no white in it. (We do have white trimmings on baseboards and windows around the kitchen and the rest of the house, but that's about it.) We tried a few other solid colours like cream and beige, but they seemed to blend in with the wall too much. We also tried two or three tone mosaic glass tiles, and even though they seemed to go really well with the granite, they looked dull and boring when put together with the rest. Here's the white glass tile she suggests. Any feedback? Is it too stark? Should we go with something warmer? Just to refresh your memory, this is what the kitchen will look like (minus the paint and floor color.) Our cabs and counter will be the same....See MoreHas anyone regretted their choice of Granite?
Comments (41)Hi Sparkier, thanks for that! Wow, interesting that you saw and liked the Splendor Gold! I made a trip back to the store for another look yesterday - for me it's a 5 hour round trip, but I just had to see what was 'new', and see my slabs, and get more input. It was good to see the whole slabs in person again, instead of the little chunk I've been toting around. My slabs have a lot of creamy, ivory in them, mixed with the warm browns, which is better for what I am doing. The consensus at the store was my that granite is actually more neutral than many others, and that it should be fine with what I am doing. There are MANY BEAUTIFUL granites out there! I wish I had several houses or applications in which to use ALL of the ones I loved! Wow, I saw a navy blue slab that was STUNNING. I would love to use that somewhere! Next house, maybe?? I think I scared everyone off with my color confessions. It's actually not as bad as I made it sound. The colored stools have no backs and will slide discreetly under the counter, and with the dark brown wood looks nice near the granite. I've been looking at lights for about 6 weeks, focusing on ivory pendants, but can't find them in the shape I want (lots of white), then stumbled across the cute, colored ones, but I've nixed those. Maybe I can find another room to use them in, they're awful cute. Pictures, yes, I'll be wondering what you end up choosing. Hopefully we'll be done or close to done first week of June. Whenever we are done, I will post pictures! Good luck to you, too!...See MoreWeek 151 - What do you regret in your remodel?
Comments (46)We've had 4 contractors...no GC. 1 plumber to move the gas line, but they didn't seem to care about building codes when they drilled though the ceiling joists and didn't listen very well when I told them where to put the gas for the range. The actual gas supply is where it needs to be but the shut off valve is *barely* not behind the adjacent cabinet. We did our own water supply. 2 drywall contractors, the first of which was recommended by neighbors and were HORRIBLE, the second were reasonably good where it counts but still haven't come back out to sand in corners near the floor so we can have straight baseboards. Good thing we're nowhere near ready for baseboards. And to be fair to them, we did have a hurricane get in the way of everything. The 4th is a very expensive electrician, who my dad has known for 20 years and does all his electric. They've been pretty good too but a lot of junction boxes are still set back to far for proper seating of covers, and we haven't even tiled the backsplash yet, which will make it even worse. Long story short, there are many out there who won't do the job you would do in your own home if you were able to. So now my regrets...we're not finished, so they haven't all come to light yet...I only have 1. I wish we had better quality cabinets. They're not terrible. They were already assembled RTA we bought off Craigslist and they saved us about $6000. The thing is, if we gotten the ones we were planning to buy (Shenandoah from Lowes) we would probably have run out of money by now. So there's that....See MoreJessica
