We are removing soffits in our kitchen. The lighting for the counter area is currently in there. Once the soffits come out all we'd have is very high ceilings that are really part of the family room. So, we decided to build out ceiling from the kitchen so it extends to the countertop. We are hanging the pendends from that. May not be an option for you however. I'd like to hear what other have done with high ceilings.

I agree, if you can install for a 3rd light, I think those sizes would work. If you have only 2 sockets, then I would do a pendent that is about 21 to 24" like below, with about a 30" space between. Good luck!

We're glad you asked! We have advice about this very subject. Pendant size is determined by taking the width (not length) of your island in inches and subtracting 12. The number you get is a good maximum size for a pendant light. We recommend spacing pendants about 2 feet apart, so with your 8 foot island you could definitely go for 3 pendants. If you do choose 3, choose ones that are a bit smaller than the maximum size per pendant as mentioned above. If you go for 2, you could pick out larger pendants (which is a popular look these days), more towards that maximum size per pendant. Some photos are attached. Island top is 108" x 54", waterfall top, honed black pearl granite. White cabinets. Ceilings flat 9'. Kitchen is open on 2 sides. Need advice on size of pendants if using two oversize pendants. I'm thinking width somewhere in 24" - 36" range depending on height, shape etc... I don't want them to look too big nor too small. I can use 3 pendants also, not set on 2 or 3, not sure. There are photos below of the type of pendants I'm leaning toward as of today but I'm open. The backsplash and hood behind it will be a pretty bold porcelain and I don't want to distract from that either (photos below).
