Your second sketch looks like it has potential. How about scooting the couch a little closer to the tv so that you could put a sofa table behind it? If this is the entrance that the family will use all the time, the right sofa table could double as storage for shoes and such, and define the "hallway" to the kitchen. An area rug will also really help ground the arrangement and get rid of the floating feeling that the furniture gave you last night. The bookshelf storage unit along the stairs make sense, but another option would be to put a bench there for folks to sit on while taking their shoes on and off. It depends on what you need most. Is it imperative to have desk space in this room, or is there another spot in the house where desks could go? I find that my kids' desks collect clutter, and I appreciate them not being in my main living space. One little one of ours is using a secretary desk in our dining room, which is nice because all of her busy little projects can be quickly tucked away. There is no space in her room for a desk right now, so this has been a good work-around.

Room painted neutral and I have some large artwork in teals and green and fabric to make pillows in same color family. I thought about putting sofa against wall but wanted to be able to face pretty view outside too

Hi John! I like option 1 because I don't like opening the door and falling into the living room. Option 1 is also good because it gives you the possibility of adding more seating if you find you are the just the host with the most and your parties are larger. I like the furniture pieces you have selected, they have clean lines and are contemporary and masculine, however for interest and variety I would add something curvilinear and stuffed, such as a round stuffed large ottoman on which you put up your feet, rest a tray, and it could also serve as an extra seat. If it is large enough it might even seat two (if they know each other well :) You can find one in leather, tufted or not, according to your taste. Or a velvet is sumptuous too, but I think a leather will hold up better to feet and trays being slip across it. Also, with your furniture being mostly clean lines and rectilinear it is important to have artwork and a few bibelots with curvilinear shapes and textures and material from nature. Think about what of those things you like that you might want to incorporate. Less is more of course, a few well-chosen things is all you need. Good luck!

Hi Salonva, thank you! This is my first ever layout I’m planning, so I’m super excited for new thoughts & ideas. Rug dimensions: 5.3’ x 7.3’ Sofa length would be around 6’ to leave at least 6 in. on each side. I might forget the table and just do 2 boho poufs instead.
