Large Kitchen vs. Large Living Room - Remodel Design Dilemma
Comments (6)@Patricia, you have a good point. I think I will definitely want to consult a designer to get their perspective from an aesthetics/space usage mindset. I do have a large media room in the lower level where my big screen is, so I figure if I ever have a large group to watch a game, etc., that is likely where I will need the most seating. The upstairs could then be used more generally for entertaining. My dining table seats 10 and moving it into living area would allow me to add chairs on either end. The addition of a 9-10’ Island would add seating as well. At worst, the family in its current footprint could snugly fit a ~6-7 person sectional and a chair. I think with an additional ~2-3’ feet in length and width, I should easily be able to fit a sectional in there as well as 1-2 accent chairs. Plus if I’m entertaining there would be plenty of space to gather at the end of the kitchen where the new bar would be. These pictures are not by any means exactly what I would do (I used a trial version and stock colors/cabinets), but should help give a sense of layout....See MoreLarge blank wall in living room
Comments (2)could you show more pics of the room? It probably will be easier to offer suggestions when you are moved in and have your furniture arranged. It's possible that frame contained a mirror that someone broke, but it doesn't look like a great spot for a mirror....See MoreFurniture arrangement for living room with bookcase on one wall
Comments (5)Thanks Beverly. There is no television in this room because we use it for reading and visiting. Yes, the fireplace is on an angle and the book case is not. The bookcase runs parallel to windows just out of sight in this photo (left). Please see the photo taken from the wood floor as requested. We also moved the existing furniture around to experiment with furniture layout in these photos. Although the angled arrangement of loveseat and couch before felt cozy, I have to say the L-shaped arrangement makes the room feel much bigger. Wondering if the couch and love seat on make the room feel too heavy on one side. We think we'd like to put an armchair on wall below large painting - ideally two but may not be enough room....See MoreCedar Ceiling help, large living room...keep or paint?
Comments (10)When I bought my home one of my first thoughts was to remove the wall between the kitchen and living area. Thankfully I was unable to do anything right away. I posted pics of my space and got a lot of feedback. Patricia was one of the people who said - don't do it. She also recommended changing the kitchen to a galley kitchen to increase work space. The longer I lived in the space the more I realized that the only things that didn't work in my space were - I needed more work space and I hated that you can see my sink from the front door. I am planning on doing the kitchen reno next year. It will be a galley kitchen with just the dining space open to the living room and the kitchen open to the dining. Opening it up may have been pretty - but I would have lost so much functionality that it would not have been worth the trade....See MoreIdaClaire
