Paint Exterior Design Dilemma

Exterior help-Paint trim cream?

I had a painter do some touch ups on my porch. He accidentally painted ALL the wood. It looks nice (Pic 1) but I’m considering having him paint the trim cream to match window trim. What looks better (& please excuse the not great photoshop job)? The trim painted white at alcove opening, alcove and door, or only door trim? Or..no white trim around door at all? Thank you so much for your advice!!

#1 but you paint the door trim the same as the door..it would make the front door look larger.

Then, consider panting the walls of the entry cream. I think the lighter paint on the three walls would brighten up the space…like the cream meeting the blue door in above photo.

I like it as is. I might paint trim around door same color as the door - or heck maybe even the entire alcove around the door. The fact that it is recessed into the house is all the emphasis it needs. White trim would just add visual clutter and also emphasize that the door looks oddly small in combination with the windows - or is that just the angle of the camera making the windows look large and much higher up than the top of the door?

We're having a dickens of a time picking a white for the body of our small cottage, so I can tell you what we've learned so far. We want a white that doesn't look like primer but also doesn't look like butter. We have black windows and doors. SW Roman Column looks too buttery for us. We then tried SW Westhighland White, which we had left over from the interior, and when we painted it over the RC, you could barely tell a difference. Then we tried SW Pure White in a couple areas and it may lean toward the primer, when are they going to put on the top coat, look. We haven't found much in SW between Westhighland and Pure White. I have a chip of BM Simply White which may work. Our next move will either be the BM or Westhighland cut down 50% so it's whiter. We live next door to a yellow house so that could be an issue as well. For you, I think Westhighland may be the ticket and could even be too white.

Since you already have white gutters, malhgold, maybe this isn't an issue for you. Maybe they stay looking good longer in your area than in mine. You can always ask your painters how well white gutters fare in your area and then decide. But if you want options, you can paint the trim below the gutters white (or cream) and paint the gutters in a color that closely matches your roof. Or you could paint the gutters the same as your house color. It all depends on whether you want to make the gutters - a functional feature - stand out as an architectural feature or give prominence to the real architectural features on your home. As for downspouts, I'd paint them the same color as whatever they are resting on: trim color if they are on top of trim or house color if they hang down in front of siding. I never used to see it this way but I'm with laurainlincoln now. Gutters aren't architectural, they're a necessity and I don't want to draw attention to them. Unless they're copper gutters with artistic downspouts like gushing dragons' mouths. Then heck yeah, make them babies stand out, they cost enough! LOL Anyway, I see gutters in the same light as electrical outlets in a kitchen's backsplash. Extremely useful, couldn't live without them but I don't want to focus attention on them. One more thing. Previously our gutters were painted a midnight blue. We noticed when we were getting ready to paint that they also looked more tired than the rest of the house, however their darker color better hid that fact. Your home may be simpler in style than the house in BM's brochure but it's still very lovely!

no. it's a softer white. I used these 3 on my home, from 3 diff paint brands. the swiss coffee was Behr, I believe wrought iron I did on all of the other trim, although you can't really see much of it here. so hard to get a pic of my home because the sun is always behind the house. as you can see, the warm wood tones keep the colors from looking too 'cold'. I did the platinum on the fascia trim only because I thought my roof tiles were going to be darker. but they aren't. wished I had gone w/the darker color. BM brands. shoji is warmer Navajo white would also be a lot more creamier

I'd paint the door trim the same color as the door to make the door seem larger. Add two large potted plants on each side of the steps. Remove that green plant...not pretty,

^I love that idea of painting the door trim the same color as the door and the interior of that entry cream! That makes the whole entry feel more substantial IMO.

Another vote for painting the door trim to match the door. I would go farther and paint the steps and the strip of concrete below the door to match also.

I would probably paint the entry trim to match the window trim - and I would consider adding a strip of molding to the existing trim to make it about half again wider.

Hi all! Thank you for input. I do like the idea of painting trim to match door to make the door more substantial. Mock up below.

I also did a mock up of trim around alcove in cream. And am posting the ‘before’ so y’all see that I want all the wood siding to be darker to hide flaws. It was fairly busted before. :) I painted the steps and did what I could to make her look nicer as I hemorrhage money.

Plant will be relocated and a pot put in its place. It may expose some cracked concrete...

Thoughts? I’m leaning towards leaving alcove trim color of house. Looks cleaner.

I couldn’t find a good image but this sort of conveys my thought about having ground cover surround your new potted plant. This would still give mass to that area and add height. I feel just a potted plant there will look barren. Good advice about front door trim to match door.

I like the door trim matching the door and have changed my mind about the inset being cream. I had no idea that your door was surrounded by wood on the diagonal until you showed it in your new post. I do like the trim around the door to match the door (exactly) and leave the alcove the current color of your home as it is now. thinkdesignlive has an excellent idea about having the ground cover surround the new potted plant.

Paint the door trim to match it. Then photo and "try on" more changes. Personally, I would like the steps (or at least the treads) to be white so they contrast and can be seen when attempting to climb them. Since there is pattern to the alcove walls, you might try white to see if it evens out the "ripples." Apps to play with should help you take it a step at a time.
