CCRS Rare Rose Auction Roses
Comments (0)Don't know what I did to attract the shoe spammer to the prior post, but we added about ten new roses to the auction lists today, so I thought I'd repost this. California Coastal Rose Society is holding its 10th annual RARE ROSE AUCTION between now and November 14, 2010. Internet bids must be submitted by noon on November 13, 2010. The auction is designed to provide rare, unusual, hard to obtain, not yet released and no longer available rose plants to participating bidders. Theses plants come from the hidden recesses of private gardens belonging to members and friends of CCRS, from special offerings of "off the menu" plants in various commercial nurseries throughout the USA and from hybridizers who share their plants with us even before they are released. The aim of the CCRS Auction Committee is to provide plants that will foster pride in ownership and serve as a special point of interest in the owner's garden. We strive to provide plants of numerous types including species roses, OGRs, POL, HT, FB, MiniFl and Minis. The Auction is divided into two parts: a Silent Auction and a Live Auction. The roses to be auctioned are listed at these two links. Details, including internet bidding procedures, can be found at our website: CCRS Rare Rose Auction Site This year for the first time, we are able to ship roses, but only within the USA. Comments (6)I think the high price rose this year (and deservedly so in my opinion) was Takao at $72. Attached is a pic of my Takao today that I posted on HMF. But the roses are not all expensive. I ended up with four roses: Symphony (Austin yellow) $6 By Appt. (Harkness very fragrant apricot floribunda) $8 Poopsie (a new exhibition mini-flora not available in commerce anywhere) $17 Dorothy Anne (an older hybrid tea by Joe Winchel that is no longer in commerce) $19. Comments (47)I was also looking for SUMMER SONG last year. I was surprised that it was not in the Austin catalogue given its release date in the UK and was only available in North America through Pickering and Palantine. Pickering and Palantine had both sold out early. I tried to ordred this rose from Pickering on the first day they were taking orders and was told that they could not sell it to those in the US. I called the Austin headquarters in Tyler, TX and was told that this rose does NOT perform well in the US and that they had made the business decision NOT to introduce it here. I found this very odd and disppointing. I am aware that a few decades ago, they almost discarded some of the earlier Austin varieties (Tamora comes to mind) because they did not perform well in the UK and perhaps other European trial locations. Fortunately, they were planted at the Huntington Library gardens in southern CA, where they performed very well and these varieties are now available to us to grow. I was able to obtain a SUMMER SONG plant from someone in the midwest who had ordered it from one of the Canadian suppliers. It is now planted in my garden and it is already starting to show signs of growth. I am glad to hear that it is doing well for you, Beth. I am very much looking forward to seeing how it does well in central CA....See MoreI’m going back for day 2 of the CCRS Auction
Comments (13)I loved Marbree! Very nice win! I won a NO ID in the silent auction and two that I bid on. The first one was a dwarf hybrid musk? Jet Spray. It looked and sounded delightful in the PowerPoint presentation. I got it for only $10! Does anyone know bout Jet Spray? There are no blooms on it right now. The second bid is a brand new intro by John Bagnasco. A darling raspberry pink polyantha with tiny blooms. It has an Heirloom roses tag, so I assume it will be released next year. I did pay a bit more for Kendyl Marie. Here’s her picture. Opps, upside down! She’s very pretty and I think those tiny blooms will be wonderful in the vase. There were many great roses that either I didn’t have the space for, or were out of my price range. One thing I did learn, is that it doesn’t do any good to place a bunch of low bids early in the silent auction. Many went for very reasonable prices, but they were placed the last few minutes of the silent auction. I just left my bids stand and only won one rose in the silent auction. I know for next time, but I really didn’t “need” anything. I just wanted:) I arrived on Sunday just as the silent auction closed, and apparently I should have arrived about 15 minutes earlier. That’s ok, less holes to dig. Here’s a few rose pictures from the auction. Great Speckled Bird, below.I would have liked Pink Intuition. This one went a little too high for me in the live auction, while Red Intuition went for about $20. Wish I liked reds! Red Intuition belowRed Intuition This one was very much the hot item in the silent auction. I believe Bob Martin took it home. I enjoyed speaking with him again on Sunday. Surprised to find out that he lives about 5 miles from me. More to follow. I need a minute. Lisa...See MorenanadollZ7 SWIdaho
