Dog possibly having an allergic reaction to something...

I noticed a raised spot this morning. She is short/smooth coat so you see the small bump easily. Over the day, a couple more have popped up. She doesn't seem bothered by them...doesn't hurt if I touch them. Should I wait and see what happens in the next day or two before taking her to the vet? I can't think of anything that she ate or may have came in contact that is different than usual. I guess it really could be an allergy or reaction to just about anything huh...

Can you post a picture? Maybe someone will be familiar with what you are experiencing.

Of course, when in doubt, go to the vet. But, it never hurts to gather information.

I used to run to the vet for everything with my Golden. Now with my current dog, we are more of a "let's wait and see."

The weirdest thing that my dog had an allergic reaction to is one of those Elk Antlers one time. She was chewing on it for a little while and all of a sudden, I noticed just what you described. HIVES!

You say nothing has changed but did you just open a new bag of food or a new bag of threats? Just washed her bed in a new detergent? Lit a new candle? Anything really. Sounds like hives.

Possibly she got stung by something and you didn't see it happen? Once my dog stepped on some bee thing, and broke out in hives on her back.

Make sure she isn't having any breathing issues or panting. Check to see that there is no swelling around her mouth/tongue.

Traute: maybe you are thinking of giant hogweed? It is very large and looks like a giant Queen anne's lace plant. Very unique. These plants are extremely poisonous. They burn the skin badly and then cause more burns, when your skin is exposed to UV from the sun. This can continue for over a year. We have some of these plants evading our fields in Rochester and surrounding areas. I read about them three years ago and just saw them in the area about 2 years ago. They are very very dangerous. I am glad I heard about them before seeing one because they really are a unique and neat plant. I would have totally gone up to it and looked closer and for sure, touched it if I didn't know better. I have seen the plants (with the giant flower) up to 4 feet high. they have another name also and I just can't remember it right now. -renee

It sounds normal to me. Ringworm can "explode" like that in a kitten. The dip is preferred for kittens, because it's a 1-time external treatment. Adult cats are less susceptible than kittens, for some reason. And humans aren't the preferred host for that fungus, so it's possible you and your son may escape infection. Vacuum thoroughly, toss the bag, run your bedding through the dryer on HOT and hang any area rugs out in the sun. A temp of 125 for 10 minutes kills the spores. It's an excellent question, for which, alas, I have no answer. I've collected seeds from wild S. carduacea with no problem. But they are very prickly, and I can see how little bits could cause prolonged irritation. Recently I've had odd, unexplained allergic reactions to something in the native plant community, and I've wondered if I'm allergic to the sap of the S. clevelandii I've been propagating. It's not the leaves that cause the problem, but I pruned off the central stems, and it was around then that the mysterious rashes started. That process is over, and the rashes have subsided. It's just a hypothesis. Several decades ago, long before I even knew of the existence of Salvia clevelandii, I suffered strong reactions to something in the chaparral that caused swelling, inflamation and flaking skin around my eyes. It wasn't poison-oak (Toxicodendron diversilobum), to which I'm certainly allergic, but with different symptoms.

Put my tree up last night with help from a friend. Itchy, hive like blisters at my wrists. I’ve recently done allergy testing and was told i have eczema. Didn’t realize that was a fancy way of saying contact dermatitis til tonight. 😮 As i’m a sleep scratcher i have already rubbed these things raw and decided to search for this topic. I didn’t realize there were so many different types of ”eczema”, and I’m a nurse. It all makes total sense now. So glad i found y’all here. Will definitely go with the gloves/long sleeves for tear down and hopefully remember for next season

Sorry to disappear...the bumps went away. Thanks for the replies. I did keep an eye on her last night to make sure she wasn't having any issues. So far so good today.

Next time she goes to the vet mention this. Maybe the vet will suggest giving a dose of Benedryl if it happens again.
