Have you considered a peninsula instead of an island? That would give you a clear tun between fridge, sink and stove.

either way: extending the wall and/or island are really compromising the breakfast nook. the island can provide you storage but the L shape w assumed seating is marginal as far s roominess/comfort and so forth...and then the breakfast nook will be difficult to get table and chair seating to work. I'm confused how this is all going to actually work for you. I might skip the wall extended version....keep an island in a straight/not L shape ..a little longer than what you show....and have an overhang of some inches on fridge side and get small scale stools and push under ...they will be used more transient fashion which is okay...[what are the aisle dimensions ??]. just allow the breakfast nook it's adequate sq footage. the breakfast nook seems relegated to afterthought ....maybe it has never been that great w lack of windows etc. But it can be made more desirable w effort and creative approach. I wouldn't restrict things and risk a more uncomfortable/tight nook.

IMO an actual to scale floor plan of the space not including cabinets at all is the place to start. Fridges and sinks need to be close together , not every kitchen needs or should have an island. Seatin at the island should not be enclsed at the ends with cabinets I see no advantage to an L shaped island You have a decent sized nook do not infringe on that . IMO you need a peninsula not an island an eating space with no windows is not a nice place to be so IMO you need to add a window to the nook for sureIt looks like you are adding a 48” range and IMO this kitchen can’t handle it and the ventilation itself in such a small space will be so noisy andexpensive it makes no sesne at all. Why the curvy things above the stove and sink those are what everyone wants gone . I have no idea of your budget or style but IMO wood hoods collect grease are apt to get yellowed and in small spaces are just overwheming. IMO you need a real KD that means not a cabinet sales person but an actual person that has nothing to gain by selling you stuff you don’t need BTW in your 3ds that nook is not looking like 10’ to me It is always best to work with 2 D drawings

@herbflavor @Patricia Colwell Consulting: the nook is actually surrounded by large windows on the left and back walls and a slider to the right; it just wasn't included in the renderings provided by the kitchen guy.

@jmm1837: I really don't want a traditional peninsula because I feel like it would cut off the flow to the breakfast area. If one of the kids needs something after we sit down to dinner, it's a long walk around the peninsula to get it.

@herbflavor: I was worried that extending the base cabinets into the nook space might make it feel too cramped/tight as you pointed out. But without the extension I think the island might look awkwardly long and I'll have more empty "dead" space by the nook. I believe the clearance is 42" at the sink and stove, with 60" at narrowest passage on fridge side.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting: Good eye catching that this was done by a cabinet sales person, not a kitchen designer. I am quickly learning that there is a big difference between the 2! I agree that the decorative finishes (hood and over window) are not necessary (nor my style) but were included because they up the price of the cabinetry order :) Thanks for your feedback.

I know very little about kitchen design, but wanted to comment anyway. I personally like a straight island, but have seen one similar to what you posted (thought about doing that myself, but decided not to). Can’t tell what you have on your island or if you are needing more storage, but maybe you can add the microwave and trash pullout (if that’s what that is) to the island. I don’t like the look of that extension past the wall, unless you plan to move the wall with it (I understand you have windows, but we don’t know where). Maybe you can go around the wall, rather than past it.

I have learned with my own design process that cabinet companies and non KD just design kitchens/place cabinets. They may know things like spacing, but are not going to be able to “design” your kitchen properly. Read up on this because there may be other free or low cost options for design help.

I agree about the things over the sink and stove. I told a designer years ago to take out all he bells and whistles and the price went down significantly. Think about what you need vs what you want and consider and pricing.
