Color Pallete for Living/Dining area with Warm Woods

last modified: 5 years ago

We're experimenting with color schemes in our new-to-us house. What wall / accent colors do you feel would work well in this living and dining space? (Pictures below.)

Accents like a table runner, new chandelier, etc. are to be determined. Ideally, the existing furniture stays and we'd like to add some additional pieces (or something a lot like them) that I will include below. We will be adding art.

For wall color:

-We've thought about keeping the walls as-is (cream, which seems to harmonize well with all the red tones).

-We've thought about painting the walls a warm white like SW Alabaster (It may be hard to tell from the photos, but Alabaster is significantly brighter and lighter than the current walls).

-We've thought about trying richer neutrals like beige or tan.

-We've thought about green and blue and blue-green combos, and I would love to use a color! Blue was my original plan. But there are a lot of warm tones here already in the wood and kitchen, and I'm not sure if a cool backdrop will make everything shine or if it will look off.

All this said, we don't have a clear direction yet & are looking for things to try! We want to make the space comfortable and interesting but we don't know what that will mean yet.

The space now (with photo bombing baby):

Entry into space

Turning toward Living Room:

*We want to add library bookcases to the big, blank wall here, which will add visual weight to the end of the long room and drop more wood color into the scheme. Also planning to place art over the brown sofa. We're committed to keeping the TV to the left where it is de-emphasized. We want to the vibe here to be cozy family library and conversation space rather than "TV viewing room."

Turning toward Dining Room and Kitchen:

*We want to add a long, low sideboard and a new chandelier to this room. Art will go over the sideboard.

*We may change the size of the table.

*Kitchen is probably staying honey oak for the foreseeable future.

*The little color swatches that happened to be up when these pictures were taken are Sherwin William's Rain [swatch in dining room] and Rainwashed [next to couch]. The walls are an unknown cream color.-
