Dragon fruit in or near 92120

I am just getting started trying to grow Dragon Fruit. I have some seeds from the local grocery story white fleshed fruit that i am sprouting. I am a little disappointed with the taste (or lack of taste) for this variety. I am trying to get into this with a minimal dollar out of pocket. This is why i am opting for seeds. I have ordered some from WISH but most people say that is prpbably a waste of time and money. Any constructive ideas or low cost sources would be appreciated.

Never had any problem getting cuttings of plants from people in the neighborhood with existing dragon fruit plants. Lots of time trimmings get tossed in the trash anyway--many people are glad to give them away.

You are in the SD area, try going to a few meetings of the SD C&S club and ask around for some cuttings.

I echo hoovb. Dragonfruit is very easy to start from cuttings, and when people trim theirs, they often have nice big pieces which are a couple of feet long. Walk through your neighborhood and you'll probably find someone who is willing to share, or go to a meeting. San Diego Succulent and Cactus Society

That looks like Deamia (Selenicereus) testudo - same sort of tropical vining cactus but doesn't produce (IMO) as desirable a fruit. I don't know the specific problems you're having, but they're usually traced back to undesirable soil - as long as what you've repotted it in is porous, and the plant remains solid, I wouldn't worry about it. Some corking, particularly on the base on older plants, is normal and should be expected.

Its coming along great Tuan. I can see its going to have a nice paver patio around it. One of the tropicals that gives good returns are the Guava's. As always,Mango tree's also. Cherimoyas. White Sapote- but thats a full blown tree and I cant promise you would love it. I do..but some can't take the custard texture. Persimmons in fall give a lot of fruit. I'm waiting to endorse banana's. For you Papaya's should be easy. I hear Thai "Red" is a heavy producer along with the common Solo. Anyways- nice Pitaya set up.
