Preparing the New Garden Area (When to do what?)
Comments (24)We know that most of our straw supply is certified weed free. Some of it is not certified so I expect some weeds. I plan to use the certified stuff around the fruit trees, strawberries, blueberries (well basically any perennial crop to keep weeds down better). The rest we will take our chances with or use it in the horse stalls first. Since with the manure we expect seeds from the hay etc and we can compost it for a while. Any recommendations on organic fertilizers (that won't break the bank for a garden that large?) We have used fish fertilizer some but generally we always go too light on the fertilizers (haven't been unhappy with our gardens though). We used to use Miracle Grow but didn't ever notice much improvement from it. I think we have about 10 yards of tree trimming mulch but i don't know when we will be able to get more. The tree trimmers were in the area at the time.....we live so rural it wouldn't be likely we could get them to deliver for free again.:( We have a bark mulch plant nearby that we could get a load of bark for $40/yard but they way overload your trailer for what you pay for....so it probably works out to something like $30/yard. We were planning to use that more in the finished landscape areas of the yard (flowerbeds, mounded landscape areas etc). About cover crops...I have always been interested in this. What are some recommended crops? I figured we'd plant something this fall when the other crops died down...is there something that will sprout/grow some before the next fall...how do you get rid of the cover crop without tilling it under etc? I love learning about all the ways to have a successful garden and I appreciate all the feedback! Little_minnie~ I like the way you chose to plant and mulch! I'll bet it works great. We might try that in a smaller scale to see how well it works for us.:) Dh still wants to peel off the grass layer but we do have a tighter area that the equipment would be hard to get to, we might try it there.:) Thanks for sharing....See MoreNew home with morning area: what size and shape for kitchen table?
Comments (5)How many people would you have to seat around the table, say for an informal party? The answer to that question will help determine the size and shape of the table. Personally, I prefer a rectangular shape, it uses space better. What a gorgeous kitchen, what color did you paint your cabinets and what is the name of your countertop and what backsplash tile did you choose? Comments (31)@Diana Bier Thank you for your input Diana and suggestions and fresh ideas. And @roarah thank you as well for the ideas. I have written to Houzz about why we cannot load photos. I wanted to show you all I did paint my open study off the foyer a very dark Van Duesen blue by BM but because my dining room was so dark before I used BM White Dove in it for a break but I do love dark walls and may paint again in the future. Maybe some dark velvet draperies would be pretty in the DR for drama or is that too much with white dove. My house is very open and the DR and study flank each side of the foyer as you enter the house with case openings. In the meantime I have a technical question for everyone. My dining room is 15'9" x 12'4". I was thinking I needed a 9x12 rug until I tried one and it is about 6" too wide. I will have to move my funiture to place it on top. uggg it is all so heavy but I want to do the right thing. So that leaves me to find a 8 foot to 8'6 x 12 or 13' rug which is not easy to find on the width. SHOULD I bite the bullet and go for a 10x14 for this size room and just move everything again - then the funiture would rest on top. Just wondering what is the right size for scale of room....See MoreNew paint color for main living area
Comments (10)I see you have Super White. I have it in my master bath. when you it's time for redoing the tile splash, let me know. It should be the last thing you do. Any of these would work (and I'd do a darker stain on the mantle. ) pale oak or classic gray are also nice options. Ya' know, You could paint your walls Simply White (eggshell) and then do all of your trimwork in one of these warm gray colors. You can just make out the trim/baseboard on this pic This one is BM White Dove and Stone Hearth paint colors Shown here on this swatch. I love Wrought Iron. did it on my kitchen island. Try some of these combos. see if you like them. In my space I have Light Pewter on the walls, Simply White on the baseboard, Wrought Iron on the island w/a marble top that's similar in looks to your Super White. It's hard to get all 4 in one shot, so here's the wall and baseboard shot and a shot of the island in Wrought Iron w/the marble top. the cabs are color matched to Simply White Some other warmer grays and taupes Try edgecomb or Revere pewter if you think the stone hearth is too dark I'd upgrade that fan too For the kitchen, if you want to warm things up, I'd get new lighting, chairs/hardware. Your current pendants are way too high. max height should be 36" from the top of the counter Here's a visual: I'd prob switch them out to something like these. (I have others if you don't like this) and get one of these textured natural wood loom style chairs. you have the space for two Hood pendants. hardware, i like the gold, but this nickle/chrome is also nice The Knurled pulls are my new faves. all diff finishes and styles....See MoreRelated Professionals
