Anyone use a regular curtain rod to hang a shower curtain?

Trying to problem solve here -- looking for input, ok if you guys tell me this is a stupid idea. I am having a devil of time figuring out how to tie the mish-mash of colors I've got going on in my small bathroom. Wall paint is easy --> dark teal (it picks up tiny mosaic accent colors in the light blue floor in there), but I have to paint the vanity too, right now it's a butt-ugly "distressed" white with blue. So, I'm thinking something like in this pic may work (and the wall color is close to what I picked out, which is BM Beau Green):

BUT -- I've got grey shower tile to deal with. Not just plain ol' grey. Oh no, that would be too simple. The other owner tiled the shower stall in a shade of cool grey, then he decided to put 3" tile on the outside of the shower stall in a warm grey, and this goes a 80" or so up the wall. Sigh....if I put white paint next to that wall tile it will stick out like a sore thumb.

So I thought if I got an extra-long white shower curtain and hung it outside of the shower stall to cover the 3" tile on each side of the stall, that would solve the problem and I can run with something like the above pic.

Truthfully, I don't even like white, but I'm at such a loss what to do with that vanity. DH said he'd replace the vanity top but not the entire vanity, so I'm stuck with it. (plus we eventually want to totally remodel, probably few years from now, so this is just a fix to tide me over).

So, would the outside mount curtain look stooopid? Or is there any doohickey that would enable me to hang a traditional shower rod on the outside of stall?

(I've got a dumb phone so no pic of my own bathroom right now)

If you use this shower, you want some sort of curtain liner that will drain into the shower. (2 rods - one curtain that works as a shower curtain, a clear liner. The other one to hide what you don’t like.) Expect that guests will still peak to see what is behind the curtain. Having a curtain closed also makes the room small, which may or may not be a problem depending on the room size.

^^ Only used when we have guests. I think it's been used all of 1 time in the past year. The room is already small -- ~5 x 8 (not counting the shower stall and closet, which are recessed into the wall), I keep the shower curtain that is there now closed all the time.

Lots of shower curtains are made from polyester, so I would think a polyester window curtain would work fine. I have a cloth shower curtain (cotton print to match one of my duvets) with separate poly liner. I found hooks at Bedbathbeyond that lay over the rod with an interior and exterior hook for the 2 curtains to keep them somewhat separated, but that might not work with a regular curtain, I guess.

For years I used a clear liner under my curtain which I raised up a little higher than normal, but not that high, and liked the effect...I stopped using the plastic liners though for concern over phthalates offgassing.. I am so careful about using organic foods and cleaners I felt I needed to be more sensitive to environmental toxins....now I have a fabric curtain that does not need a liner, although I'm sure there is a heavy does of chemicals to allow that to happen! Just want to clarify I'm not suggesting others stop using their liners, but want people who may care to be aware.

There is another wqy to add sheers behind your drapes and much less expensive than the 'Add a Rod' idea as well as less cumbersome than the bungee idea, depending on the type of rod you use for the drapes. IF you use a standard type curtain rod, there is a solid 'u' shaped hook you can insert into the bottom fold of the of the rod while inserting a regular cafe type rod into it to hold the sheers. They can be found at big box stores and often at drapery stores. lollll But I can't find it on the Internet drapery ads. Mucho inexpensive, mucho easy, and your sheers will definitely be behind your drapes as far as you want.

Actually had two shower curtains on my alcove shower. One was a fixed shower curtain that was hung on an exterior rod from wall to wall. It had a valance and two fixed panels, one on either side. Then, I had another shower curtain. This was a plain white cloth curtain that was on the rod. It was on rings that also included a plastic curtain for water protection. So....two rods. An exterior one. That was covering my end walls/tiles. Then, a regular bath rod that held both a fabric outer curtain and a plastic one. We no longer have this system or I would post a photo. But, yes...it can be done!

How about this. Add short curtain rods on each side, like these photos with curtains, and your regular shower curtain rod on the inside. Then the external tiles are always hidden and you are never pulling the short side panels closed.

^^ Those are lovely. But, in my case, I want to hide what's behind the curtain...

I ended up going in a totally different direction with the bathroom and should be able to tie it all in with what I've got picked out. DH agreed to put down some click-lock flooring so I'm no longer stuck with wonky blue tile and I can take it in the direction I really want to go -- which is rustic. The mis-matched shower tile will still be there but I'm confident I can hide it more easily now. I'll post some reveal pics when it's done. DH is going to work on it during Christmas break.
