It's funny but most real farm houses i have frequented have kitchens and homes more in tune to your style than Joanna and Chip's interputation of farm house.

I understand your desire to update. But I think starting small might give you a nice start without turning your home into something it is not. Start maybe by removing the boarder paper, changing the light fixtures and replacing window treatments with simple panels or Roman or woven blinds.

I like mixing furniture instead of whole sweets so my end tables are all unique. I have a few antique side tables and a few metal ones too. You could look for antique pieces for I think they might blend well with you style. Antique oak is darker than your newer table and chairs but still has strong graining.

Have fun with you project, but I think starting with smaller tweaks rather than trying to incorporate new or fading trends keeps a home more authentic to its owner's story and thus makes the house so much more personal and beautiful.
