What keeps you going?
Comments (20)Tally - I think that sometimes we have to allow ourselves to have a little break emotionally occasionally. You have been through so much since the hurricane last fall. It seems you have kept a smile on your face (although I haven't seen your face - but only through reading here) and you keep going. You probably needed to "lose it" for a little while and probably feel better emotionally releasing all that tension. I think anything we do to get our minds off our "daily grind" helps keep us all going. Gardening, pulling weeds, watering the vegetables, pulling weeds, feeding the fish in the pond, pulling weeds, oh . . . did I mention pulling weeds? My mind can wander and contemplate on many issues and solve many problems while I am busy pulling weeds. I am in my own little universe when I'm in my yard and garden. Children are another source of happiness and sometimes stress, but mostly happiness. I have three boys and they eat a lot, pass gas and laugh about it, burp and laugh about it, and it starts all over again. I know some of those things are nasty, but boys love to laugh at their bodily functions and sometimes it makes me laugh too. Then there are those moments where they will say or do the most amazing things and it will make me stop and appreciate them more - even with all their gross bodily functions. My faith also helps me meditate in prayer and figure things out. Like freshair was saying, the hymns can bring it all back to what is really important - trying our best to be like Jesus. Exercise also helps. It releases those happy hormones and makes me feel a whole lot better throughout the day. I know that I would feel pretty crappy if I didn't get my regular workouts....See MoreHow do you deal with stress?
Comments (71)Thank you, Funnygirl, Red_lover, Outsideplaying, Daisychain, Annie and Peony for the kind words. Mom went into the hospital last night because she couldn’t breath. I think she was having another anxiety attack as she mentioned that they gave her a shot to calm her down, but I’m not sure because I couldn’t understand her well over the phone. Speaking of bottling up emotions…I’m very worried about my younger sister. She said that mom is just playing up her symptoms for attention. I don’t get that at forty nine she hasn’t let go of any of our shared early family life baggage. She has made it all so much a part of her everyday existence. While I do not agree with opening every single box of past doom to “heal” I think it’s manageable if you realize that you are not at all unique in struggling with past emotions. Past emotions are like little appendages that are always going to be with you. I think of mine as being in one toe (my little toe). That toe will get stubbed occasionally but you must keep moving on. Or, one could look at it like having the antibodies to measles. You will always have those antibodies just like millions of others. Some more than others will need to take steps in not walking around like one has an active case of measles and do what one needs to do to keep a good head. I know this is easier said than done though. My sister keeps everything bottled....See Moreidiot-proof paint how-to? (walls)
Comments (38)Hi all -- back again after a few days off email. Oceanna, we did use a primer, mainly because we were covering semigloss (we did briefly scuff sand it, though, just in case) and because we didn't have enough extra white paint in the garage. Just one coat of Behr (HD) interior primer, which was enough to give us a mostly-white wall -- not perfect, though. (should we do it again, do you think?) but we will probably do two coats of whatever color we eventually choose. I am leaning towards a very light grey-toned taupe (BM Hot Spring Stones is the most likely culprit), but am not sure, and knew the hideous pink would affect any color I tried to test on that wall. So we had to get it to white, or mostly-white, to be able to figure out what we'd want as a permanent color. Satisfaction: enormous! I've never painted before, and it felt wonderful to figure out how to do it, to see the results so quickly, to feel like I can affect the quality of the space around me rather than hiring someone. Very empowering. (my kids were leaping around delighted, too, and demanding that their rooms get painted next. I am thinking of putting magnetic primer or chalkboard paint in their rooms -- that'd be really fun. And I like the idea of them doing it with me, although I'm not sure how well I'd like the reality, given that they're 6 and 3!) I might hire out the very long facing wall next to this one, because we'll probably paint that one a more neutral color than it currently is, but it's not anywhere near as offensive as the pink, so I'm in no rush. What I learned here made the whole process easier, esp the bit about rollering first and cutting-in later. Thanks again!...See MoreWhat do you think about every day
Comments (29)My kids, my dogs, my garden, friends, WWIII, retirement, and work. PIcking up a lot of overtime in the next few weeks as we are short staffed and going to get shorter as I know of two others who are retiring this year. They're hiring quite a few people for the uptick in calls since Covid 19 started but they will take months to get hired and trained. Will be busy with work, seed starting and putting together new raised beds that are on the way. I'm also debating on whether or not to take my upcoming 2 weeks of vacation or just 1 of them to work in the garden or go to Florida with a friend. She wants to go to the Keys, it's on her bucket list and although I'm not a beach person I would like to see it and the wildlife....See MoreDawnInCal
