Are you looking at single hungs, casements, sliders? I like the 100 casements, sliders the singles hungs have some drawbacks.

They should fit as well as anything else.

Do not buy Marvin windows

. You pay for the Marvin brand name and you get a very sub par window. We have casement windows and they are very drafty. There’s condensation on the inside. Here’s a photo of our new windows in their first winter

They 100 is on par performance wise with some of the better vinyl products with similar glass packs, and a tick or two behind some of the others. There are many reasons to choose these type products. cost and rot are the obvious reasons To choose over wood. There are many reasons to choose over vinyl as well. The top quality vinyl products that many promote here are very regional and even where there are available dealers can be sparse and many hours away. Marvin and Andersen products are much more available . These composites are available with the hot and trendy black interiors and other colors as well, colored exteriors on vinyls can add wiite a bit of cost. Both of these companies use Cardinal glass which boast the lowest seal failure rate. They also dont have the beveled exteriors that pvc windows have . Even though they don’t have the richness of wood they also don’t have synthetic look of pvc. Both have exterior trim options that pvc typically does not have. I’m sure I missed many other things but I think they all have there place.

What are the stats on the 100 DH these days Todd? Do they make a DH? How about the Essentials stats as well?

Personally I don't think that they look an ounce more organic than vinyl, particularly given that is what they are primarily made of (the Andersen options) but that is subjective. I'd say the same for the Marvin. Not a fan of the meeting rail lift rail(100), but that's also subjective. There are vinyl windows that can do black interiors and exteriors, don't have beveled exteriors, use Cardinal and other reliable glass options, and have exterior trim options. Did I miss any of your "points"? For a person that wants a black interior, flat exterior profile, decent if not top level performance, doesn't care about tilting in the top sash for cleaning or other conveniences of a double hung(100), and doesn't have better performing vinyl options available to them, certainly they can be valid choices.

i Have always said I dislike the 100 series Side loaded , single hung with pocket sill and why I typically ask someone when lookinng for recommendations what type of window they are looking at and there slider is only a single operator as well, as you can see from my first post I did ask . Yes , there are some vinyl that have a paintable interior, but of the brands that get recommend I can only think of one, so ones options of finding a dealer can even more limited or none at all. Yes, many vinyl casements do not have a beveled profile but most double hungs and slider do and yes some vinyl do use Cardinal glass. I did say most vinyl companies do not have exterior trim accessories , not all , those that do typically don’t have as many as Marvin or Anderson. I agree they are viable options, but we all don’t live in area where there are multiple vinyl options from a narrow list of quality vinyl manufactures that only sell to limited dealers. Get an hour outside my area and the pickings get slim.

As great as some of these vinyl windows are to many they will just be shiny plastic and cheap looking.

Do your windows have to be replaced? Are they leaking or just old and ugly? My daughter just did her windows and we did a lot of research. She/I selected the Anderson 400 Woodwright series. We also looked at Marvin Integrity, but felt the Anderson 400's were a better match for her traditional colonial home. They were NOT cheap, therefore she could only do 10 windows and will do the rest in phases. Anderson 100's are the lowest end - I'd keep my old windows instead of replacing with that quality window. I doubt they'll last the 10 years you're planning on being in the house.

Things Change with looks and lines of windows when going from double hungs to casements. I’d agree that woodwright has a more traditional look than the Interigity, the Marvin Ultima has the most traditional lines compared to both of those but is not typically price point friendly. The 100 double hung would have features I’d like in apartment /rental unit Such as they don’t tilt in , and they are single hung( less things for renters to mess with) . I see no quality issues that would prevent them from lasting more than 10 years But also have no direct experience with them. I have done some Woodwrights and Marvin’s, the worst thing is staining/painting them , lot of parts to remove ir tape off. I always say never again.

Todd, you just said 100 series double hung, but then that they don't tilt in? They are only single hungs, correct?

Thanks for clarifying your other comments. So in summary, you believe that the reasons to choose Andersen 100 over a quality, high performing vinyl window are in the following circumstances:

- casement operator, and I'd assume awnings if they make them?

- no single hungs as they have undesirable design features like pocket sill

- no double hungs because they don't make this window in this most common configuration

- if an interior color that is not available in a good vinyl window is available

- if someone wants a simpler exterior profile and they don't have a good vinyl window with that available in their area.. I should note though that this is typically brought up on the coved/beaded screen track of some vinyl double hungs. Most vinyl double casements are fairly simple much like the Andersen and Marvin.

- if there are one or more of these features, and there are not any good vinyl windows available in their location that have them

- Also, one of your primary problems with vinyl windows is that there are not many manufacturers that offer some of these options, and your solution is an alternative material offered by precisely one manufacturer. Check

- Lastly, Andersen 100's are available readily almost everywhere. Probably irrelevant for those that have better options available, but certainly relevant in markets where they don't.

I agree with you Todd. This window is definitely a good choice for these folks. The casement is not a bad window, and certainly in some circumstances it fits exactly what people are looking for. Those circumstances are simply dramatically fewer than those where a vinyl or wood window would likely be a better fit, and the reason for my original post. Thanks

@ladydoc, what type of operator (ie hung or casement) are you considering?

I need some new but majority can be replaced. Some tell just do new construction throughout as you have to be careful with replacements. But unless you are cutting new holes what is the issue with replace, maybe an inch less glass all round?

I said both single hung in my first 2 post and slipped in my last post and called then double hung, my mistake. I’m not really saying what to pick or why, just trying point some things out. Never said or tried to imply there is just one other manufacturer of alternative materials , Just because you think I did does not = check. The 100’s are a viable choice in any area ,that’s the consumers choice .When I list things that someone could find fault with vinyl does not mean that they are my problems with vinyl. Just to be clear , My sales are close to 90% vinyl, I have vinyl that I installed in my last 2 homes and wood sash kits in my rental. I have been happy with all and would recommend any one of them depending on what someone wants. I’m really just trying to give some honest pros and cons a Little information. I have never installed a 100series window and have only 2 Anderson window jobs , I have installed quite a few MArvin Ultima’s . Regardless of what we all think the 100 series growing and I seen them more and more. I think it is safe to say that some like them for a reason as the are not cheaper than a quality vinyl window (at least wth what I have priced) and they are definitely a lot more than a cheap vinyl.

When you mix new installs with inserts in the same house. There can be problems with uniformity On where the trim sits with regards to the window frame. This goes for both the interior and exterior. Interior windows don’t matter as much if the windows are in different rooms and the exterior maynot matter either if the windows are on different walls and some may not know the difference regardless. The glass los can be significant than 1“, but you could also gain glass as well by changing the configuration/ amount of windows in an opening oroperater type. Hopefully you get a contractor that can explain everything to the you and guide you in the right direction.

Just remembering what I was told, casements should never be inserts they should always be new construction. Only double hungs are better for insert replacements. Any thoughts.

It’s because you lose about 1 1/2-2 inch of glass in a casement replacement. Not the same for hung.

That’s not accurate LD, Todd is right. The amount of glass lost can vary substantially depending on what’s being removed as well as the product being installed. In some cases no glass Is lost even on a replacement, but that’s rare. The 1-1.5” loss is probably a fair average overall, but again, lots af variables and casement vs hung is not a main factor

I recently got a few prices for Anderson 100 series and Anderson 400’s and they came out very similarly price wise. For example, there was only about a $50 difference for a 5050 double casement. Does this seem right?

Yes, that is common.

I was just surprised by the pricing, because I frequently read on these boards (such as this thread) that the 100 series is a cheaper window, and I expected the 400 series to be significantly more.

This true for sliders and single hung and sliding door but not casement. Not a big fan of the 100 door.

The casements can be closely priced as well.

What did you end up deciding on? Are you happy with your choice?

We decided on the Anderson’s, but Covid came along so everything is in hold till we get back to work.
