Karl Frisch Defeats Anti-LGBTQ Opponent in Virginia; Becomes Only Openly LGBTQ Member of Fairfax County School Board

November 5, 2019

Washington, DC – Karl Frisch defeated his anti-LGBTQ opponent Andrea Bayer tonight, becoming the only openly LGBTQ member of the Fairfax County School Board and one of the few openly LGBTQ elected officials in Fairfax County. Frisch’s opponent had said initiatives to address anti-LGBTQ bullying in schools was “wasting our time” and that the LGBTQ community was “the loudest special interest group.” There are currently just 11 openly LGBTQ elected officials serving in all of Virginia.

Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund, released the following statement about Frisch’s victory:

“When Karl’s opponent deployed the tired anti-LGBTQ political playbook, Karl stuck to his script, highlighting kitchen table issues and laying out a plan to help all students succeed in Fairfax County schools. LGBTQ people in Virginia continue to be severely underrepresented in elected office, but Karl’s victory tonight provides one more role model for young LGBTQ people who desperately need them.”

In addition to using anti-LGBTQ rhetoric throughout the campaign, Frisch’s opponent received funding from anti-LGBTQ activists including former Virginia Delegate Bob “Bigot Bob” Marshall, the self-proclaimed “chief homophobe” of the Virginia state legislature, who was defeated by transgender candidate Danica Roem in 2017.

Live Election Night Results: Victory Fund is live tracking the election results for its 111 openly LGBTQ endorsed candidates. The latest updates can be found at victoryfund.org/results2019.

Yawn. VA elected a trans woman recently, too. Why is it all the Left sees is color and sexual preference? The hyper-awareness is conspicuous.

Both were the better candidate. Why bring anything else to their win? It's so bigoted.

But it was another loss for the pubs - esp the bigoted ones.

Did you have any problem with Bayer making it known she was anti-LGBTQ?

BTW, why are Republicans/conservatives so comfortable with bigots?

“ Why bring anything else to their win?”

Because their opponents brought gender/sexuality to the campaign. That makes their wins sweetly ironic and well worth noting. The electorate made a clear decision that they do not endorse bigotry.

When colour and sexual orientation are part of a political issue it needs to be highlighted.

ETA corrected, thanks Lars.

It is not "sexual preference", it is "sexual orientation". To call it "preference" implies that it is a choice, and clearly it is not. This is one of the reasons that it is so necessary for bullying against LGBTQ to be treated as a hateful or discriminatory act. All bullying is bad, but it happens to gay students disproportionately, so much so that the suicide rate for gay teenagers is much higher than the rest of that age group.

Good news because it means the people doing the voting are changing the way they view people. Congratulations to the voting population of Virginia.

I would love to see a day when no one needs to comment on sex or color ethnicity or orientation or what ever else but we are not there yet.

So sexuality however it is manifested is what makes or breaks a candidate for public office??? SERIOUSLY??? It is NO ONES BUSINESS who or what someone decides to share an orgasm with!!! And the odder it is doesn't make you special/in need of sympathy/ or new laws!! NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT IT!!

All that is probably true arcy.

It might be a good idea to tell Republican politicians not to make anti-LGBTQ a platform plank. No one wants it and the voters are speaking quite clearly on that.

As long as Repubs keep attacking gay and trans people for being gay and trans, we will respond in defense of them.

It is that simple.

Why does the Left need to reduce everyone to their sexual preference? Why take way from this man's win and make it about an agenda? What about his platform? You know, his substance beyond his genitals and who he prefers to make love to?

Exactly. Don't be loudly anti-LGBTQ and don't oppose programs designed to help people deal with you When you are and then no one will bring it up.

I will do an addendum here, having sexual partners is not the defining point of LGBTQ status any more than it has to do with being Hetero.

So the Left feels it appropriate to make his win about his sexual preference. As if his opponent doing just that wasn't offensive enough.

Oh for goodness sake! When the conservatives start treating the LBGTQ as though they are like any other person then it will not be a political issue. In the real world this is a political issue, lives can be harmed and devalued with laws made by Anti-LBGTQ politicians, so heck yes, it is political.

Frankly the fact that this man won and was Gay doesn't detract from his success it adds to it.

Now the reason the Left keeps on making this all about this man being gay is because his opponent did? I thought they claimed to be better than that!

It's a shame his success is being reduced to his opponent's screed, even after his accomplishment.

This is why they are hated. And it's not going to get any better.

Correction: only a small, transphobic part of the population hates transgendered people.

Gonzalez said the stiletto-wielding straphanger may have been transgender and likely felt “provoked” by the preacher.

So....a crazy person assaulting someone on the subway is now being used as ammunition against trans people because there was an ASSUMPTION made that the attacker was transgender?

And for the fire one:

You said: He killed three German Shepherds and two cats - all his own pets - because he got upset that gay movement wasn't lively enough in his town.

The article says:Meanwhile, a police investigative report suggests a possible reason for the fire.

Again, another ASSUMPTION made to make transgender people look bad. Why can't these people just be mentally ill? Why do you need to make it sound like being transgender is at all relevant to the situation?

They [LGBTQ] are attacked for taking away our identities and our rights, and for stuff like that:

They are?

I haven't experienced any loss of rights due to same-sex marriage, equal rights for LGBTQ, and whatever that nonsensical panic was about trans persons being able to use restrooms that match their identities.

I went to a convention last week and there were a number of "All Gender" restrooms with multiple stalls. I used them a few times, with both men and women in line, and still felt like I kept my identity and rights as a woman!

Some key quotes from the OP article for those who think any poster here made the win about sexuality or gender identity:

-Frisch’s opponent had said initiatives to address anti-LGBTQ bullying in schools was “wasting our time” and that the LGBTQ community was “the loudest special interest group.”

-“When Karl’s opponent deployed the tired anti-LGBTQ political playbook, Karl stuck to his script, highlighting kitchen table issues and laying out a plan to help all students succeed in Fairfax County schools.

-Frisch’s opponent received funding from anti-LGBTQ activists including former Virginia Delegate Bob “Bigot Bob” Marshall, the self-proclaimed “chief homophobe” of the Virginia state legislature, who was defeated by transgender candidate Danica Roem in 2017.

(I can't be bothered to format it properly, the bullet points are all direct quotes from the article.)

''transphobic'' in nothing more than a liberal buzz word for intellectually lazy whose critical thinking is diminished to the level of an earthworm mental capacity. It's the tool intended to label, shame and make an opponent look anti-social and dehumanize him. In reality it means nothing more than ''I disagree with you''.

Just as ''racist'', ''bigot'', and ''Nazi'' it doesn't impress me and the rest of the American population. It's not a small fraction of the population who see what LGBT is up to, it's the majority. Don't kid yourself.

Mentally ill people are not investigated by FBI for a hate crime. He killed five innocent souls who trusted him and loved him over his freaking gay issues. No, he is not mentally ill, he is a peace of garbage. Unless you mean that homosexualism is a mental disorder.

People who have suffered discrimination want equal rights and equal protections.

How nefarious!

I agree with you that he's a piece of garbage but I think anyone who murders innocent people or animals is mentally ill. I also disagree that being gay or transgender has anything to do with it other than people like you making the assumption that's why he killed his pets.

"It's the tool intended to label, shame and make an opponent look anti-social and dehumanize him."

No, it's when people make horrible assumptions and judgements of people because of prejudice. Assuming that assaulters or murderers commit their crimes because they are transexual or gay when there is no evidence other than people thinking it.

For creating fear around lies like transgender people are trying to take away our identities and rights. I would wager the vast majority just want equal rights and to be treated with respect. Not to be "hated" and mocked, called mentally ill or an "it". That's what I consider transphobic.

To repeat, bullying is apparent right here:

" And the odder it is doesn't make you special/in need..."

"Normalization of sexual deviance is their goal."

It's this level of comfort in inserting these derogatory phrases that continues this as an issue.
