Design Dilemma Dining Room Flooring

rug pad for luxury vinyl plank?

Hi. I am hoping to get some suggestions on what rug pad I should get for luxury vinyl plank- or if it’s necessary. The rug is a polypropylene to go under my dining room table. I just want to make sure my LVP doesn’t get damaged but also don’t want to buy a pad if it isn’t necessary. Thank you!!!

Rug pads prolong the life of the rug, help them stay put, make cleaning spills and crumbs easier and increase overall comfort. I recommend a felt type. RugpadsUSA is a good source, as is Pottery Barn. Having said that, is a rug in the dining room really necessary? Also, check to see what the LVP manufacturer recommends. Keep in mind that polypropylene is basically a disposable rug material and not intended to last more than two-three years.

Thank you Anne I appreciate the info. A rug in our dining room is necessary because we have window cornices that my dad made me so I chose not to have curtains because I have dogs and in our last house- the curtains got destroyed. So we really don’t have a way to “dress up” the dining room other than some wall decor and a nice rug to help fill the room if that makes sense.

Also- our LVP scratches so easy it’s awful! Even with felt pads under our dining room chairs when I pull the chairs in and out our floor would scratch horribly! Especially if you’re sitting on them and slide out like most people do...

I wasn’t looking for a rug too expensive and I also was having a super hard time finding a rug that was the colors/style I was looking for (black and tan) and I happened to find the PERFECT one which is cheap polypropylene (unfortunately) I’m hoping it lasts a bit longer than 2-3 years because our dining room never really even gets used to be honest. It’s just there for show at this point. LOL!

Vinyl products do NOT like anything soft/squishy underneath them. In fact they can separate or break their own edges if you have underpadding underneath. If the Pergo vinyl has an attached underlayment, then it is DEFINITELY NOT allowed to add anything else. This is NORMAL for vinyl. In fact it is a major drawback for all vinyl products. Underpadding is not allowed with 99.9% of vinyl floating/glue down/perimeter glue products. The installation instructions will tell you what is ALLOWED to be used. If it is listed then it is allowed. If you do NOT see it listed, then it is NOT allowed. It is an easy rule to follow. Continue with the rigid underlayment (like you did in the bathroom). The noise reduction from the attached underlayment is the only padding/accustic insulation you are going to get.

YES. One big FYI. The middle of the planks is a form of stone or cement. We do have some unevenness in our floor (two different pours in the family room created a 1/2 inch drop. One of the planks started to come up. The store sent down a highly experienced person to repair it. He used a circular power saw to cut in the middle of the plank, the entire length of the plank. Then a second cut about an inch wide to allow space to remove the plank without damaging the locking ends of the adjoining planks. He then removed the plank, and using a special tool, inserted it without any damage. He put a length of rug padding, under the plank, to prevent another bend. He could have used floor level material, but it would have very inconvenient for us, given drying time and the location. The process took 4 hours for one plank. No charge as the store offers a lifetime satisfaction warranty and they live up to that. We are glad we got it. Make absolutely certain that if you have any uneven areas, including loose gravel near the patio door, that the floor liquid leveling be perfect. The less expensive planks are more flexible, and tolerate floor discrepancies better.

I would recommend you install a reliable insulation level to prevent water. Of course, it would be great to increase a level of foundation but it is impossible to do now. That is why you can put a special membrane that will not absorb water and become working insulation. Try to google it, there are a lot of variants now on the market. As for a top layer, you can put anything you like. Hardwood is always good material. I have it as well. We bought several Persian rugs from the DorisLeslieBlau gallery. And they look great!

IMO a pad under a rug under a table is making the rug too thick and really difficult to move the chairs in and out but if you must use felt. Have you looked into Chilewich floor mats or the Ruggables

We had LVP installed in our basement last fall and I believe this is the rug pad we used.

And I actually haven’t looked into ruggables or chilewich! I’ve never even heard of them but I will look right now. :)

I'm guessing the polypropylene (PP) rug is just fine all by itself. Chemically speaking PP is a very stable plastic. It is considered inert and therefore safe with everything.

If you have a photo of the rug and a photo of the backing, that would be very helpful.

@sj McCarthy here are some photos of the rug and backing. Thank you so much I would appreciate the help. I don’t want to buy a pad if it isn’t necessary but I don’t want to damage my flooring either so it’d be great if I would be safe with just the rug!

You should be fine. The weave is the only 'backing' these rugs have. So long as these rugs are heavy enough, they can be used without underpad.

This is exactly what I was hoping for.
