How long and how often do you work in the garden?
Comments (15)For as long as I can take it, and usually every day. Sometimes 15 minutes, sometimes 3-4 hours total, but that would be in several spurts with breaks, maybe a meal in between. That would include everything from pulling whatever weeds I see, to watering, to grooming/deadheading, fixing stray grass coming through a border, fertilizing. All of this stuff I really think of as puttering, not working, because I like doing it. Most of my perennials are shrubs or other plants that don't need much done to them. There are the occasional heavy chores that are actual work, but they're fairly rare and well spaced. I no longer have to do the mowing, so that's made a HUGE difference in time and effort spent elsewhere. I find this has me tackling more tougher tasks more often, trying things I wouldn't have felt like I had time for before. Awesome! But, I can't go at it like I used to in my younger years. I still get asked for my ID but if you look closely, you'll see the gray hairs, bifocals, arthritic thumbs. Don't think I'll ever acclimate to the oppressive heat down here although I prefer to live here. Thank God for A/C! Going outside in summer here is like going outside in winter up north. If you stay too long, it could kill ya....See MoreKindle Fire users, how's it going?
Comments (25)The battery on my Kindle Fire lasts a good eight hours with Wi-Fi turned on, more with the Wi-Fi off. But I pretty much always leave the Wi-Fi on because we have a wireless network here at home, and there's wireless at work, too. Tami, once you've downloaded a book to your Fire, you should be able to read the entire book with the wireless turned off. Go to the home screen on the Fire. You should see the Carousel, the Favorites shelf, and near the top, from left to right you should see the words "Newstand," "Books," "Music," "Video," "Docs," "Apps," and "Web." Touch on the word "Books." Centered near the top, just under where the time is displayed, you will see the words "Cloud," and "Device." Directly below them, also centered, you will see the words, "By Author," "By Recent," and "By Title." Whichever words are shown in orange are active. So, if the words "Cloud" and "By Author" are orange, it means that you are looking at all of your books that are in the Amazon cloud, and they are arranged by the authors' names. Also, if you're looking at the "cloud view," any books that have a small dark grey circle with a white downward-pointing arrow in the lower right-hand corner are only in the cloud. Any books that don't have that circle/arrow showing have been downloaded to your device. So, in the Books view, touch on "Device." Doesn't matter how they're sorted -- you just want at this point to see which books are on your device. If no books are showing in the Device view, it means you haven't really downloaded any books to the Fire itself. If you DO see books in the Device view, then turn off the wireless. You should still see those same books in the Device view. And you should be able to touch any one of them to open it and begin reading. You wrote, above, "I can not read with out wi-fi. I am supposed to be able to, but can not make it do it. I have not contacted amazon yet as I want to be home with no distractions when I do so. I have done everything that's been suggested otherwise, ans still can't read with out it, unless I just let it go to sleep instead of shutting it down." It's that last phrase that has me puzzled. You say you can't read without the wireless being on unless you let it go to sleep. When the device is in sleep mode, it's sort of the same as being powered off, except that you can bring it back more quickly. When the device is in sleep mode, it's not using the battery, but you can't do anything with/on it because it's asleep. So... if you look at the books on your Device, and it shows books, but you cannot read them without wireless, it means there is something wrong with your particular Kindle Fire, and you need to contact Amazon....See MoreHow to order from Rose's unlimited?
Comments (43)This week I received 6 roses from HCR and they were perfect fitting snuggly in the box to avoid movement. That was also my experience with Burling. I received some crushed ones from Chamblees when I ordered from them 2016. ARE does pack each in its own cardboard section to prevent movement as they are so large and heavy. My Austin's were bareroot, so just in a bag. Did you not want to share the source Deborah? I totally understand as I don't like to trash any of these wonderful places. Now that I have more experience, I care less if they are crushed or even broken and more about the size of rootball. I know with a well-developed root system they'll race forward with top-growth regardless! : )) Just my experience....See MoreMy Kindle has taken over my life!
Comments (56)"Amazon does is to tell you if you have already purchased the book" Just an FYI that Amazon only tells you if you bought a particular version of a book. If another version comes out, it doesn't tell you. I've run into that several times. If a book sounds familiar, I usually go to my content and search for it to see if I have an earlier version. In my case, I have the Kindle Voyage -- precursor to the Kindle Oasis. I bought it in 2014. It has both auto-brightness and adaptive display. Auto-brightness changes the brightness depending on the ambient light based on what you say you like for brightness. Adaptive brightness then gradually dims the brightness as your eyes adjust. I was skeptical about adaptive, but it works pretty well. Sometimes it does dim a bit too much, but not often. It also has page turn buttons that can be turned off if you don't like them -- I like them. I like that I can read in bed and not bother my DH with a light. I had the Kindle Keyboard 2, but it stopped holding a charge after a couple of years. I also have a Kindle Fire HD 7" that I use as a tablet. It works fine for me since I don't use them much. (I'm not a big fan of tablets -- I prefer an actual keyboard and larger screen). I'm not a fan of Apple products -- they minimize the amount of customization you can do and I customize EVERYTHING to the hilt. so they don't work for me. (I tried a Mac and hated the limitations.) We got my 85-year old mom a 10" Kindle Fire HD b/c she likes to read the newspaper online and the Fire works better than the e-readers for that. She also uses it as a tablet and hasn't complained about it. It's been especially helpful for her now, during COVID-19, as well as when she had a knee replaced a couple of years ago. I got the "reading gene" from her -- she's always been an avid reader! (She's into historical fiction/romance, I'm into Science Fiction and some Fantasy.)...See Moresocks
