Help! Black dust coming from door hinges
Comments (28)I have the same problem. I'm convinced this has nothing to do with graphite, but is related to the hinge not being properly lubricated. For example, In my home office (unused bedroom, of course) my passageway door has three hinges. Only one hinge squeaks, and not coincidentally, this is the only hinge with the black dust next to it. When you hear the squeak, I'm pretty sure this indicates a stop/start vibration in the hinge that actually flings metal filings away from the hinge surfaces that are squeaking. I took a magnet to the dust, and sure enough, some of it stuck to the magnet (no I didn't actually touch the dust to the magnet, the dust jumped across the distance from the molding to the magnet). So this dust is actually iron filings, coming from the door hinge itself. (note that what you think are brass hinges, are almost always steel hinges with a brass finish) The best idea I've read on this forum is the idea to use wax on the hinge pin. I suspect that any heavier wax or grease would work well, although with less expensive hinges, nothing will last forever. Lighter oils will likely just leave a mess (I think I tried light oil a few years back). If you want to avoid the black dust, ante up the extra money and upgrade to a hinge with real bearings and not just metal-on-metal pins. Good hinges are expensive, so that's why many of us don't have them....See MoreHelp! Front door color getting "thumbs down" from neighbors
Comments (57)I am beyond amazed by the wonderful (and sometimes humorous) input on this thread! Wow! (Mamarella, your house looks beautiful, by the way! I can definitely see the similarities in color, although the scope of your house is much larger from the front.) On Monday, I picked up a bunch of paint chips at the local hardware store and held them up for my husband to see. (Many of them were colors that were recommended on here...or similar!) We have decided to go with some sort of blue (probably with green-ish undertones), but we had a lot of trouble narrowing the field down to one color. I have about 8-10 swatches set aside, and I am going to look them over tomorrow with a friend who has a good eye for color. Then, I will buy a few small jars of paint and see what actually looks good when it's up! We will see if the neighbors decide to chime in this time around. :-) To answer a few questions, I live outside of Boston, and we are moving from just a few blocks away. Therefore, I already know some of the neighbors, and they feel comfortable enough telling me when they don't like something....for better or for worse! Likewise, I appreciate the honest--and varied--input on this thread. :-) What a wonderful resource! I will certainly let you all know what we decide, and I might even post a photo with the "finalists!" Many thanks again! Sara...See MoreHelp!! Can't open armoire doors (X-post from furniture)
Comments (8)Thanks to everyone for your input. Justgotabeme. . .it worked!! At least a variation thereof. After reading your crochet hook idea, I had a very thin awl that I put in the hole, slanted it downward (with a little cloth padding underneath the handle to protect the finish) and pulled outward. . . it worked!! Monablair. . .tried that, but the weight of the doors wasn't enough to pop them open. Justusbarkers and Tropicals. . GREAT ideas!! If the awl (crochet hook wannabe) hadn't worked, your recommendations would have been nex. . and I'm betting they would have worked as well!! Thanks to everyone!! I knew I'd find a solution here !!...See MoreKickplate on side door where cement floor is uneven- help please.
