Should I put valances in my kitchen and family room windows?
Comments (10)OK, with two votes from Les and Squirrel, I'm going to go down to Lowes today to get more valances and rods for all windows except the transoms--plus another rod for my bedroom window. DH is going to be busy this Sat. I hope to have some results to post by Monday. I'm really not sure, though, how many panels to use--one or two. The package says for 36" and each window is 42" so if you factor in extending past the trim it will be about 48"W--too much for one panel, perhaps not enough for two, though I could always cut one in half and trim the ends. I like how it is with the dip in the center of the window, though and having more panels will have more dips. Les: We considered the other wall--but it really is not far enough to get the correct viewing distance, plus we need some clearance for the dining chairs. At this point, it would be hard to move it since between the insulation and sheerwall we needed to add to that room, all the walls are closed and I don't want to see any wires along the walls. DH had the electrician pull all kinds of $$ high tech "structured wiring" plus speaker wire so I'm afraid the TV is where it is at this point. I like the idea of having a sofa/console table, though the drop leaf tableis too wide given the dimensions of the room so the only other logical spot for it would be where the ent. center is now and we will have to see how it works once the new console comes in. I do need to do something to the back wall--not quite sure what. Given we are a family of 5 with three kids and this is where we spend the bulk of our time together, this room needs to have a more practical decor as it gets cluttered very easily. My favorite thing is the new ottoman as I can stash all kinds of stuff in there. My kids hate my new plaid cushions and are always throwing them on the floor as they find it more comfortable to sit on the sectional without them. Good thing they are washable! Here's a few other angles the show the wall and area I would like to add a small chair in case you have any other suggestions:...See MoreValance Dilemma - What Do You Suggest
Comments (2)View # 3 --- and sorry for the ugly view out the back - covered up patio furniture and snow - which is melting - except we are supposed to get 8" tomorrow! And also sorry about the multiple posts - Photobucket was not cooperating today!! Thank you again for any ideas!...See MoreWant to update my dining room-suggestions please
Comments (9)Hi juliekcmo. I'm procrastinating right now, so here I am, on GW. I'm sure I'll get motivated to find the painting supplies that are packed away in the basement soon... So, that room is really nice. The one thing that immediately hits me is the need for curtain panels. If the color is a keeper (you know how hard it is to actually convey the true color in a photo) I might play with the idea of curtains that are closet to the wall color, so they add texture but yet not add another color. That's where I'd start. I think a rug would really be nice in there too. And since you have to move the table anyway when Thanksgiving comes It would be easy to roll it up (take it to the carpet place nearby and have it cleaned during that time) and then put it back after the holidays all nice and fresh. Sort of like a little spa time for the rug. ;) Then, maybe a new chandy. It can act as a piece of art in the room. You can also add one of those faux plaster thingamajigs on the ceiling where the chandy goes. Medallion, that's it. Faux plaster medallion. That really would give your ceiling more interest. Well, I guess I better go find the blue painters tape and get my project moving.......See MorePaint color suggestions for kitchen please
Comments (11)Thank you all for your suggestions. I have a rare weekday off today so am headed out to a paint store soon. I'll pick up some blues, greens, and whites. It will probably be a multi-week project to pick a color and get the kitchen painted. Still debating whether to hire someone or do it myself. It was very nice of several of you to comment on the valances. Thank you. I do still like them although I've had them for years. I tend to take a long time to purchase things for my home as I wait until I find something I love. I still love those. I figured someone would say to remove them as that seems to be a trend. I also thought someone would tell me to remove the globes--again seems to be another trend. They do reflect my history and interests a bit. One came from my former teaching days. The rest I picked them up at garage sales and flea markets over a few years. Most are older with the exception of the black one. Husband bought it for me as a gift....See MoreColleen
