In theory, sand and other fine particles can be used if the drainage is such that the water quickly drains out of the area that the roots occupy. In practice, sand in a pot is a very bad idea unless your pots are the size of buckets. Small containers don't have the depth to drain water away from the root zone, and they don't have enough mass to keep the sand damp enough for the roots to take water from. Consider garden soil. It works fine in the garden, even pure clay soil, because the stuff around a plant's roots is connected to a huge drain-cum-reservoir. Dig up a chunk of soil and put it in a pot outside and suddenly it gets soupy too quickly and dries solid too quickly. In practice, anyone who's asking for advice on succulents and soil should be discouraged from sand and other fine particles. It's too much of a balancing act -- just use a gritty mix so that you can water the plant as often as you like without worrying about drowning it.

Laundry water is greywater. It can be used successfully on plants. You don't even need a permit to build a greywater system if only the laundry is on it, because you wouldn't be changing the existing plumbing. I installed a greywater system and my wife says it was the best thing I ever did (not sure how I should take that). The only thing I will caution you about is watch what you are adding to the wash. You don't want a bleach cycle going to the landscape. Also, most laundry detergents have a lot of sodium, but there are some like Eccos that don't and those are better for the plants. That said, lot's of people just use whatever and are ok. I also recommend going all the way and installing a brached drain system that includes the bathroom sinks and showers. Brought last year has done well, been pruned, all new le waves, however with new growth, leaves are curled and and look stunned. The bottom leaves look very different than new growth. Looked for bugs didn't see anything, put insect dust to be sure. This tree is growing nicely. Please help
