Low-growing sidewalk fence ideas?
Comments (9)Thanks for all the suggestions! To answer some of the issues brought up: isabella_ma, straight sidewalk right at the street with no buffer sod, east facing. I like the low-growing junipers idea, will think about that ironbelly, the sign thought crossed my mind... more along the lines of - "Please keep your poodle off my grass, and I'll keep my St. Bernards off yours." (I actually have fixed boxers and a mutt, but nobody sees them so what would they know.) ;-) Nandina, lol.. short-sighted is an understatement. My community sees only the bottom line - show them the money and they'll show you the welcome mat (= airport expansion in the middle of a bedroom community... how stupid is that?... Jets landing and taking off at 1am are not conducive for a good night's rest.) This was one fishy deal (zone changes 20 years ago but lost paperwork to prove it, etc) and we did fight it. Neighbors shelled out upwards of $200 apiece for a lawyer to help us, and we attended several council meetings to present our side and get snarky comments from our yuppy mayor. Postponed construction for 8 months... whoopie. We did manage to get the developer to pay for the sidewalk; they were going to charge us for the privilege of having a safe(r) place for our kids to walk to school (how the city got away with not putting the sidewalk in in the first place I'll never know). There are pockets of woods disappearing like this all over. It sucks, but life goes on. laag, these were not exactly the projects - interestingly each unit of these four-plexes cost about the same as my house. Not sure what would possess anyone to buy one, but must be some reason. ;-) I like the fence idea, am wondering about one of those upright and connecting rope things, though - maybe at a height to keep the humans from tripping, and with chicken wire at the bottom to keep the pooches from going under. Plantings would be on our side and grow up over and hopefully through somewhat. Still looking for something that will not grow much width-wise but up - maybe a vine? Still thinking... cathy_in_pa, I will be finding out about speed bumps... guess a call to city hall is next for that one. Thanks for reminding me. littledog, I think that's what she meant for that. I agree about not being held hostage. But I can adapt. Maybe this is what I needed to actually landscape my yard. That'll be the way I think of it. :-)...See MorePlanting along sidewalks
Comments (27)Your planting is lovely, Jackie. There are a lot of pretty photos here. When I lived in Olympia naturally I gardened right up to the street. Some things I learned were not to plant anything there that I would deeply regret losing, and not to plant flowers that were good for cutting. Also to be very nice to anyone who actually came to my door and asked permission to cut a few flowers, rather than just taking them. When I bought my house the neighborhood was just beginning a mild gentrification after a decade or two of decay. There wasn't much happening in the way of gardening. When I was well on my way planting things, people began apologizing to me for the state of their yards! And some people began gardening themselves. Jackie implied this in one of her comments to the effect that people treated the space better once she and her husband planted it and began taking care of it. Having these garden areas has a good effect on everyone. This is slightly off topic, but I'm thinking about encouraging gardening in the neighborhood: one of my sisters every once in a while holds a plant giveaway, getting rid of her extra and unwanted plants. She lives in a very small town where everybody knows each other. The giveaway solves a double need of disposing of the plants, and encouraging others to garden. Comments (26)Here is ear full.... I found a new still in box double burner electric Hotplate. It sure came in handy while I was apt hunting and living in a motel while I was in community college. There has been dozens of other things over the years that I have found. One time a crushed watch with real jewels ( like rubies, pearls and opal's ) and a few diamonds that I sold for $50...I think back now and realized I was cheated as the jewels and diamonds were worth much more but I guess I needed the money. Found a $20 in grocery store, bought my daughter a school jacket with that money. Have found a ten here and a five there...on and on I could go. So many other things I have found that I could write a book. Bought a purse once and it had $9 inside...the purse was a buck. A dollar pair of pants that I found a ten inside the pocket. Bought a real leather coat at a thrift for .25 and found a whole pocket of change. Have dug up gold rings with my metal detector, watches that worked and other types of jewelry. Found $36 wad of bills on floor of Walmart isle, ( no name ) turned it in to the manager with my ph #, someone called claiming it and I gave directions to her to come to the house and pick it up....no thank you after I handed the money to her. Found a Disney trinket with a name, called and the father came to the house and said his daughter had lost it and he was nice, no reward though. When Sams Club first opened I found a pkg of two in a cart on the very far end of the parking lot, there wasn't anyone around so I didn't feel guilty. Another time at Sams I found two huge rolls of A. foil, again no one around . I found two full bags of groceries at a Winn Dixie shopping center on the other coast of Florida, t but I took it inside the manager took my name and said if no one claimed them within a couple of days it was mine. I remember there was a beef roast, chicken and canned stuff. so it was a lot of groceries I found. He called me to come pick it up. I think God had a big hand in that as He knew I was poor and hungry during a difficult period in my life. Found two twenty dollar bills but it was 2 separate times, wind blown money on ground outside. Ten dollar bill in my drawer where I keep underware only..nothing with pockets in that drawer. Odd. Not very many losses except one I will never forget, someone stole quite a sum of money out of my purse while I was in Beauty College....See MoreHow to cover a concrete sidewalk with wood.
Comments (4)Thank you all, I do like the Furnone's approach, -removable/lifting sections-, still need to figure out how to make sure that rain water drains properly and how to "nail" the sections to the concrete so they are not loose when walking/standing on it and at the same time making them easy to remove (usage of hingeÂ). dainaadele, nice idea to build it "upside down" screwing from the bottomÂ..for sure I will post pictures of the entire project, and also from my last one completed (trellis shade shelter). Again thanks for your ideasÂyou know sometimes we get lost when looking for ideas, even making them so harder/complicated loosing sight of easy/simple solutions, someone on another forum suggest me to tear out the entire concrete sidewalk , but it doesnÂt make sense to spend money there as its in a perfect condition, only 2 years old. I am just trying to add a nice touch to my patio....See Morecolleenoz
