Flooring Design Dilemma Fireplaces

What to do next to fireplace?

We tore out a brick fireplace and discovered that there was no hardwood floor that continued under the brick. Now we’re not sure what to put in that space to the left of the fireplace.

We don’t want to replace the wood there because we are worried about the large cost for such a small amount and don’t think it will match well.

the missing wood is about 4”deep by 52”. we we’re thinking about a built in bench but it would stick out past the fireplace and might look odd since the fireplace is flush with the wall. We are also adding shiplap to the entire wall.

Brick is usually laid before flooring, so not surprised. I think the only real solution is to get additional wood flooring woven into what you have -- worth getting an estimate, at least. Otherwise, maybe a shallow built-in to act as a console under your TV? What were you going to do with that space?

I think a shallow low TV cabinet would be the simple answer

Wow, no local rules about the junk or the loose animals? When you asked for a fast screen I immediately thought of my lonicera sempervirens which grows 15' every summer and stays green until frost. There are so many tendrils and vines that it easily obscures in the winter as well. Also may consider red twig dogwood? Both are native and attractive. Maybe ilex opaca as well? The flowers attract many pollinators and the leaves are thorny. This may not be an appropriate suggestion but it would be cheaper than a fence! Osage orange--used by farmers as living fences to contain and protect their livestock because of the massive thorns. Apparently useful for other things as well. Would rsearch this thoroughly! Keep us posted as to your decision.

I think you would feature the curve in the couches better by creating a curved placement .....flare the ends out ...pull the inside ends closer together and a little further back from the fireplace...creating a fuller more graceful curve over all...they don’t have to touch in the center...but could...

You will need to get the issue properly diagnosed before we can address the problem. Either through soil testing or by carefully removing the bark at the root collar area. If armillaria (honey fungus), there will be a white mycelial mat showing on the cambium. If it is armillaria, there's not a lot that can be done. There is no treatment available for this disease. But don't panic yet....get a confirmed ID. ETA: In case it is the armillaria, you want to disturb the soil as little as possible.

if you want a consistent crop .. you are probably going to have to start.. in late winter.. a spray regimen ... else.. odds are.. year after year.. you will have some level of failure .. if you are in MI.. im surprised you didnt get hit by one of the hard frosts.. or the freeze ... and there aint no spray for that .. lol ... the multiple yearly sprayings.. is one reason i quit playing around with hobby fruit trees ... ken junkie.. how did you know he was in MI??? .. more secret stuff i cant see .. lol ... https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Michigan+State+extension+peach+problems%3B&t=ffcm&iax=images&ia=images
