When did you realize you were a 'plant' person?
Comments (11)Many of you have said how gardening is therapuetic, and I agree with that. The longer this thread goes on the more I think it is therapeutic. :) I miss my grandmother as well, but she had no influence on my love for gardens. I am 32 years old. When I was a kid, I guess I was in denial a little bit. I loved to play outside like most kids, except I wasnt playing ball with the other boys. I would go dam up the creek so I could dig out a waterfall in it. Then release the dam and see the effects my efforts had. I spent years in boyscouts skipping merit badge classes at camp to go out and do similar things as well as catch critters... all kinds... snakes ...lizards.. chipmunks...scorpions.. turtles... But this was only so I could take them somwhere and design their new home with plants and all.... I am probably going way to far in this post ....but here is the level of my nerdom. When I was 12 a freind showed me the JRR Tolkien book "The Hobbit". I loved the mental imageof "the Shire" it instilled in my head . So a freind and I went out into the woods and created a miniature version of the shire using moss, algae, small plants, and rocks. Later in life I rented houses and always told myself it was a waste to garden or landscape since it wasnt my property. Then I bought my first house and got married. My wife and her family brought me out of my denial. I had a nice size lot, and my in-laws lived in the country with TONS of land. It was designers dream. They let me help with plant selections and locations and then it began. Since then (5 years and counting) I have been an addict. My wife and I's entertainment is to just walk around different nurseries. Its outta control... My parents took our kids for the weekend.... and the first night my wife and I just spent at three different nurseries. The next day we planted our prizes. That evening we went on a garden tour of Powell Gardens. And the last day we spent designing our next project. This probably does not qualify me as a plant person, but I am a landscaper junky. My lot is maybe 130' X 50', and in the last two years here is what I have done: Built: 3 retaining walls 18' X 15' Rock patio Planted: 3 trees 6 hostas 5 wild grasses 2 lilac trees 3 hydrangeas 2 wisteria 3 clematis 4 Phlox 60 assorted bulbs (hyacinths, tulips, alliums etc.) 60 stepables(elfin thyme and irish moss on patio between stones) 6 daylilies (not the ditch kind, for you greenguy and Ken) 6 Mums 4 Elepahant ears 5 Coleus 2 Crape Myrtles and Im sure I am missing some other stuff... and that is all on my little bitty property, not to mention what I have done at my In-Laws. so I guess im well on my way to being a "plant person"...See MoreDid you or your grown kids play with toys when they were young?
Comments (20)Bumble, you might be my DD's biological mom LOL. Her (self imposed) goal this summer is to cook more "real meals." She already bakes a lot, with some supervision, and makes pancakes independently. Her real obsession these days is duct tape. She has made a variety of wallets, purses, etc. She usually makes at least one a day. She has probably 25 rolls of various colors and patterns at the moment. I honestly don't think I could make one of those wallets myself, and I'm fairly crafty...or used to be! She has her own glue gun. Tish, like you say, she's not a great speller or much of a reader but she can read complicated directions or a recipe and figure it out no problem, so she's all set!...See MoreWhen Did You Realize You Were No Longer Young?
Comments (42)Hi Ron, Congrats on having kept your inquiring mind intact ... and the muscles more or less so. _______________ Had it in mind, when I saw the topic, to reply, "Not yet!". But then I remembered that about seven? years ago son was going to help a friend move and I planned to visit a cousin while he was doing so, but the guy had a lot of stuff (including banana boxes largely filled with books) and I stayed to help for a while. After climbing 19 steps carrying a fairly heavy load ... ... one could swear that someone was pulling steps off of the bottom and adding them to the top of that danged stair! I stayed for some time, and didn't have serious trouble carrying the loads ... and when I did, I'd quite for bit. Recently, when we were helping another friend move ... quite a few steps up to second story in a commercial area (don't remember exactly how many), after a few such trips (and, if I recall, carrying lighter stuff), my knees told me that this was not a pleasant activity. And recently, at the investment group a young, curious, vivacious lady appeared, and, early on, asked me to give her a hug. I found her rather attractive ... and, on relating the story to son, was told to "Go for it", but have been playing it cool. On a recent visit, after sharing an account of some recent relational heartbreak ... ... she told me that I remind me of her grandfather ... and earlier, on seeing me when I was wearing my falsies (teeth, that is), she said that it made me look ten years younger. Oh, well. Have a great weekend. I have some tomatoes that are growing like crazy ... needed staking last week (if not earlier). And weeds that need hoeing/pulling. And beans/peas that need picking ... but may leave that till morning, to take to church fresher ... but that darned church starts at 10 rather than 10:30, in summer! Is it true that as we get older we tend to procrastinate? ole joyful...See MoreDid You Have a Shower When You Were Married?
Comments (53)No - DH and I were both independent adults with decent jobs when we got married. We did, however, host a party to celebrate the engagement and requested no gifts. Most people abided by our wishes. We also requested no wedding gifts. Again, most people abided by our wishes. I'd have preferred that everyone had, but some people just couldn't do that....See More3katz4me
