Dining Room needs updating
Comments (30)I love your hooked rug. Yes to hanging it! The texture will be a nice contrast to the glassed prints. Here is a website that has nice photos for inspiration. I tried to put the link in below but the url kept being rejected, so you can copy and paste the address. http://heirandspace.blogspot.com/2012/08/decorating-with-hooked-rugs.html I think the chairs look fine (if not little dwarfed by the wooden bench) and the rug looks anemic. I do not like the grandfather clock tucked in the corner, and after studying a multitude of Houzz photos I can say I really dislike the clocks in the corner on an angle. It's like the clocks are lurking. My favorite photographs have other objects around the clock that temper its towering mass. So maybe the clock could move to the left of the arch. Comments (14)I can relate to your struggle because I often felt the same way starting out (especially trying to make my decorating tastes mesh with my husband's often very different tastes), but just want to say I think you can still get where you want to be with your current neutral palette. Keep looking at your inspiration pictures and studying what it is they have in common, and add things you love bit by bit. April's advice is perfect. The rug can be the star if you find one you love that has tons of color and personality, or it can just be a supporting cast member. Here's another recent thread about rugs that might have some advice in it that resonates with you: http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/4848996/rug-ideas-for-bohemian-vintage-mcm-living-room?n=29...See MoreA small dining room needs big help
Comments (15)Ixnay on the allpaper-way. And don't put up new wallpaper either. It's just not versatile enough. If you want to change around your artwork, you are left with holes in your wallpaper, or huge fade marks. I just can't image why one wall is missing wainscoting. Was this a DIY job and someone ran out of steam or money? Accent walls are ridiculous. Period. When you can afford to put up the matching wainscoting on the remaining wall, please do so. Meanwhile please strip that awful wall paper and please be careful to not damage the wall underneath. Old wallpaper is not at all easy to remove, I've done it, and you want to be very slow and careful or you will have to do a ton of work repairing damage to the walls. If you paint the walls grey, please do a very light grey. Wood floors is a lovely idea, but not grey wood. That's too trendy and will be out of fashion in the blink of an eye. Pick wood that is warm in color that looks like wood with a warm color stain that goes with the wood in the rest of the house....See MoreWhat should I add to dining room?
Comments (25)Actually, I like what celery girl has come up with in the post showing both the ikea rug and a blue one. Once you have your table centered under the light, you will not have much room left, and the narrower shelving adds texture without mass. Take a look at the two looks: does it seem to you that the first room appears spacious, and the second is a bit busy? That is because the first photo is monochromatic, and relies on texture and depth of colour for interest - a much better idea for your more intimately sized room....See MoreFF
