I agree with Glo - wait and see how you feel about it as you progress with the space. If you still want something there, you could to a 1" side splash - not 4" - and extend it to meet the front of the edge profile on the stone.

Ideally, you should have run your marble tile backsplash along that side wall as well, to the edge of the counter, to that sharp edge right where the overhang starts. It still looks fine as is. What will NOT look fine is to have an out-of-the-blue 3” or 4” backsplash made from your counter material. No, do not do that. Leave it alone.

It may seem odd but it is that way in most kitchens - nothing on the side wall and definitely nothing on the side of the ref. panel. You might just be hyper focused on that spot at the moment. Take a step back, put some items out on the counter and see what you think.

No granite side splash.

I think you all are correct. No side splash. No Second guessing.

I would like to second all the votes for no side-splash. A splash is intended for exact what is sounds like - splashing (water, grease, etc.) There is no reason to have one on the side walls. In fact, trying to tile a sidesplash always looks awkward (as the countertop typically extends beyond the upper cabinets). And having a different kind of splash on the side (granite vs. tile) would also look strange.

Sorry, IMO the issue is that the backsplash and countertop are not complimenting one another.

Certainly we see both - a bare side wall, and a side wall that has backsplash tile to meet the level of the bottom of the upper cabinets. The OP opted not to tile her sidewall which is her taste, and many feel the same. But I disagree that tiling a sidesplash is an awkward look. On the contrary, I think that a sidewall that is tiled up to the bottom of the upper cabinets is both a more finished look, as well as a more high-end look. Backsplashes are expensive, both for the tile and for the installation. And turning the corner like that for the side wall requires a more skilled installer, not just your guy on the GC’s crew. When I see a tiled sidewall, I think the homeowner went the extra mile for a luxe look.

If you decide not to tile the side splashes or add granite please be careful when you wipe the side tall panel of the Frig as it can be an area that may or may not be prone to water damage.

If that area will not be used as often just wipe with a cloth and follow your cabinet manufacturers cleaning instructions.

@Shannon_WI While the tile work in your examples are nicely installed, they definitely reinforce my opinion. The sidesplash is a square of tile that has an unfinished edge on two sides. Installing a small edge piece (as in your third photo) helps, but still highlights the misalignment between upper cabinets and lower. Material changes should happen at interior corners. This applies to tile, wallpaper, paint, even exterior siding. Terminating a material in the middle of a wall looks awkward, regardless of how it is trimmed out.

@LeMaster Architects - my tile offers tile with bullnose edge, as do many. We can agree to disagree on this. I was a bit hesitant to post my third photo because it is not as well done, and the tile is cheaper. It was just for a visual. I think a well-done sidesplash with proper installation is a more finished high-end look. To be done properly, it requires a more skilled installer, is more expensive, and looks it. That is how I feel; I understand you feel differently.
