Compost heats ,then cools quickly. Need advice.
Comments (9)Chickadee, I am reading your posts and your focus seems to be on how much nitrogen (greens) you are adding to the pile. Yet, I am wondering just how much carbon (browns) is in this pile? I have seen the same results you describe when too much nitrogen sources are added to a pile; piles will not always reek to high heaven (stink) when too much nitrogen is added. So, my question to you in searching for your solution is just how much carbon is within this pile you are having a problem with? If one wants to attempt to create compost in the fastest amount of time the idea is to shred and mix all the material when creating the pile, turning the pile frequently (sometimes daily), making sure the moisture content is correct, and the C:N ratio is correct. Although I have gotten to the point that speed is not important, I do feel empathy for your situation. Other members in your zone may have additional suggestions (Tiffy comes to mind) that may have been overlooked. The carbon (browns) question may be the key Blutranes...See MoreNeed to replace washer/Dryer quickly - need advice
Comments (24)Well, the saga continues. To make a very long story short the Affinity washer and dryer was too deep for my space. I did get a guarantee that I could return it without penalty if it did not fit. The "expert installation service" we were told about really was an in-house delivery service - nothing more. The guys put the washer in the spot and said "look see - it just fits - isn't that great". We were focused on the dryer which looked pretty hopeless so we didn't even take delivery on it. After the guys left DH took a yardstick and put it from the "pony wall" across the front of the washer where the bubble door was and only then could you tell that the bubble door actually stuck out beyond the wall. It was an optical illusion that it fit because the part of the washer adjacent to the wall fit but the middle part of the washer stuck out beyond that. Anyway, they came and picked it up on Saturday and promised us a full refund. Not sure that the paperwork has been processed - yet but I am hopeful. As you know we are looking for the largest capacity we can get with the smallest depth. Now we have been recommended the following:- and I would love feedback: Washer: Bosch Axxis WAS24460UC 3.4 CU capacity only .1 smaller than the Affinity. Dryer: Axxis WTV76100US - 3.9 CU - This dryer is quite a bit smaller than the Affinity - I am concerned that this dryer can work as well on drying the same capacity coming out of a 3.4 CU washer?? I wash alot of blankets and quilts (queen size) and it is important to me to be able to wash and dry these. I am going to see these models in the store and will bring my puffiest queen size quilt to see how it fits. Would love any feedback.... Back to square one - but I'm hoping this one will do the trick.......See MoreNeed advice quickly please
Comments (5)I don't own a paint deck so I can't help with colors, but could you consider stripes as a transition? Something that blends softly with the Mannered Gold, but also works with the colors upstairs. Start your first stripe in the "new color" about 6-8" in from the bullnose. Mine was a different problem - I wanted to transition to a lighter color on my stairway upstairs and my foyer (both have very little natural light) and even though the colors blended, I didn't want a sudden stop/start of paint colours. Sorry these are the only photos I have, the lighting's not great, but you will see the dark/light stripes. The darker shade (BM Sisal) is in every room on the main floor. The lighter shade is the one that I transitioned upstairs and foyer. If you look at the kitchen shot, I ended up having to butt the two colors at the corner. It would have been easier to wrap the dark around the corner but that was poor planning on my part....See MoreHelp! Need Advice QUICKLY on Home Repair Gone Bad
Comments (22)Well, I took your combined advice and it worked! She (hopefully) fixed everything and ended up not charging me anything for it. I really do like her as a person and I trust her. And, yes, she is licensed and bonded and very experienced. But, she was originally going to charge me $190 for a new part that she brought , although "nothing for the labor" . She'd called some folks at KA and it was what they suggested. I told her that DH was really upset because we'd spent almost $1,000, had her out 4 times to fix them and nothing was fixed still. And then talked about how exhausting it always is to have to haul everything out to our garage fridge and freezer and then back again later. Which it truly is. That's a long walk back and forth dozens of times! I admit that I took the coward's way out, laying the anger on DH who wasn't present. So, she installs the new part for the oven, which was pretty complicated, as I watched the whole thing. She turned it on . . . and it still didn't work! OMG, we were both so discouraged! She tries a few more things, but nothing. And then, she notices that the oven door has a small worn (?) hole in it where the latch fits in, and it is letting the latch slide out most of the time. When it slips out, the oven won't turn on! It was fairly unobvious, being on the door itself, but when the door successfully latched and stayed latched, the oven would turn on. When the latch slipped out, the oven wouldn't. She made a temporary small metal patch that she drilled in and will now search for a replacement latch hole strip. So, the new part wasn't needed after all, but she left it in because it would have been a bear to take everything apart again. She did say that in all her almost-20 years in this business, she's never seen of such a problem or heard of it. I told her to write a paper on it to present at the next convention. And then she starts working on the freezer. She brought a small portable steamer with a cone nozzle, stuffed it down the drain in the bottom back of the freezer drawer and blew out and dried up a clog there. The clog caused the freezer to ice over and then drip. It also iced up the tracks that the drawer slides on, so we may have not needed the new runners after all. She did show me how to use our own steamer to do the same if it happens again, but she said it shouldn't for many years, if ever. She also said that the drawer was tilted down a bit and used a electric screw/bolt driver to tighten it. What a saga! I truly hope it's over! Thank you all for your thoughts, words to use, and encouragement. I listened and they worked! If people are rude to me, I have absolutely no problem "jumping down their throats with both feet", as DH likes to call it. I'm very effective wording things, both in person and in writing. But, if it's a nice person that I like, and she is, it is so, so hard for me to say anything! So, this sometimes-Cowardly Lion says, "Thank you for the borrowed courage!"...See MoreDyan S
