Exterior Design Dilemma Landscape Design

where to place outdoor pots

Hi,
I already have two beautiful blue pots by the front door and have purchased two more since I really like the color. Now I’m puzzled where to put the two additional ones. And I have two of those small trees that’ll go in those blue posts. Should I keep all four close together? Or put them further away to give more color to the front of the house since it’s kind of bare now.
(The front of the house gets a lot of sunlight during the day)

Use the pots to build balance in the front between the trees. For example, try clustering 3 of the pots on the left side of the house...between the window and the side of the house. Vary the plants (lots of texture) and the height of the plants, with the taller plants in the back. Ground the cluster with a couple of larger pumpkins. Then, keep one of the pots on the left of the door., and ground it with the two smaller pumpkins.

Leave in place and provide some sort of winter protection. Next year give TLC. Even though they are small and neglected, they've made roots and grown into the surounding soil. Moving them now will damage those roots. Get them healthy before doing any transplanting or potting. If I container plant, just as the others have suggested I put one herb type per container. Depending upon the herb, it may also be just one plant in the container or it may be multiple. It really depends upon the plant and how I intend to use it. But since plants all like different amounts of water, different amounts of light, different soil preferences, etc. having only one per container works out best. You can always try putting a variety of different plants in the same container. See how it fares versus single plant/species pots. Gardening is a great thing to learn experientially. Eventually though, I think you'll come to the same conclusion we already have. ;) FataMorgana

Hi there - some of that would depend on how wide your range/cooktop is. We have a 4 burner + grill cooktop, and then a separate two hob induction, so I put my potfiller to the left as you face the cooktop. It articulates out far enough to reach most of the cooking surface. Try to do a search for potfillers. There have been a few threads about them recently, with some great pix posted. just a light weight 20-22 inch pot. Plastic or fiberglass. Not metal, cement, ceramic, or any other heavy material. Think large pot and moving it in and out a few times a year. If it were permanent I would get a nice ceramic pot. Lots of folks have shallow pots for their adeniums so the caudux gets wider rather than deep. Also to help fight root rot. They are wider than they are deep. I see pics all over just cant find one for sale. Plus they are probably ceramic anyway. I just have a standard size and depth pot. ... Any way I just ended up setteling for a 20 inch I found at home depot. the new one I settled on. And a few more....

Stop buying pots and do something with the quality of the lawn!! Buying pots is not going to fix what's working against a perfectly charming home.

Trim the low hanging branches from your tree that overhangs the walkway and select shutters that are properly sized for your windows.

Trees rarely do well in pots I like pots for seasonal plantings but IMO 4 matching ones are 2 too many maybe 2 lower wider ones in the same color where the pumpkins are at the front. I agree the yard needs lots of attention and remove the sutters from the house they are wrong sized for sure and plantings along the walk are always nice.

They only do not do well if you don't treat them properly, otherwise trees can grow perfectly well in containers long term!! I grow a collection of more than 30 trees all in containers. And many rooftop gardeners - with no actual inground real estate - do the same. But they do take more effort and attention than the same thing planted in the ground.

If you did use the 4 containers, I would not want them all to be exactly the same size and shape. You can use the same color to tie them all together but clustering them in a grouping of different sizes and with different plantings will provide a much stronger visual impact.

I would also agree with other comments that the containers should not be your first priority. I'd focus first on some careful pruning and additional inground plantings for the foundation - the lawn issue may just be a seasonal thing but if not, work on that as well.

IMO, the shutters are a non-issue :-) They are not anything I would focus on as they just do not jar the senses as the lacking or untended landscaping does.
