Painting a Ping Pong Table

Opinion Please. I want to repaint our ping pong table that my wife has been using as a laundry table! It would seem ‘chalk’ paint is the way to go. See pictures. Will light sanding before paint be enough or am I going to have to skim coat this with something? Thanks!

My husband who had AZ had a brain scan and the result was part of his brain had atrophied. It could never get better, that part of his brain was dead. Nothing helps Alzheimer patients. The meds they give them are all experimental, never been proven to help.

I sanded again with 150 grit then 220...it's smoother...I hope the paint fills it in. if not chalk paint...then what.... the original paint on the table certainly did not feel like a chalkboard.... I suspect I'm going to need to prime it too.... will gripper latex primer suffice?

Don’t ping pong tables generally have a bit of texture? Are you planning on continuing to use it as a ping pong table, laundry table, or both? Has the surface become rougher where she sorts? It is kind of hard to tell from the picture.

they're not supposed to have a texture at all unless your wife puts wet clothes on them!

Yes. Sand to smooth out the ripples created with water. It might require wood filler if some of the plywood peels off"

Came here to add my two coins.

A friend of mine helped me and used a body filler with hardener (added a tutorial for you, Bob) - it is used for automotive. It hardens like a rock and the bounce of the ball is not that weird. He then used a epoxy lacquer flat based paint, and it looks good when it's done. Though I'm not certain - as we had just a scratch at my Stiga, and I suppose your table might be damaged by the water from drying clothes.

But once again, we had just a damaged fragment, and overall table was not so badly damaged.

As another option, I'd ask a table manufacturer first. They might help you with this. We've had this conversation in our club recently and nobody's every found the right paint that I know of.

But I'm certain that chalkboard paint won't work.

funny because that's what everyone recommends..chalkboard paint.. I am not too concerned about ball bounce...just having it look good.,it's become a catch all
....I probably should get rid of it but once repainted I think it will be fine. I think I just need to run my orbital sander over it.
