Need ideas on cabinets and counter tops that will stay in style!
Comments (8)We are building on a budget as well, and my husband and I are having these same discussions. Well, GreenDesigns might be right technically. But I have always loved white kitchens... even 30 years ago when I used to go through houses with my parents. They are still my favorite today. The cabinet styles of course have changed over the years, but boy I would pick a house with dated white cabinets over oak and brass every day. So I think you are on the right track with your choices. Wood floors also great. I would go with wood/butcher block countertops over laminate though. Even the Ikea wood countertops. Some work required, but laminate is very limiting when you are cooking, even though I know the choices are far better now. I've lived with both (and marble & granite too) and prefer the butcher block. But that's just me. ;) I'm pulling for a combo of marble and butcher block on our build... the marble is my "splurge" item. Even though it's impractical. Can't wait to see what you choose....See Moregranite counter top
Comments (20)sammi, we get functionality with our granite that we wouldn't get with a laminate. I don't understand raehelen's comment about needing to be more careful with granite than with laminate - at least as long as one is careful to choose a granite well suited to use in a kitchen (e.g. not one of the few that etch easily). We bake a lot and it is joy to have such a baking friendly work surface. We have a counter surface that can take the use of a dough scraper and has the smoothness for working with the dough. I don't think I would be comfortable doing that on laminate. When I had laminate many years ago, I had to be careful to not scratch it and to not put a very hot pan down that might scorch it. Our granite is a dream to clean up - we have 4 cooks in the kitchen and some are not always careful to wipe up. Even when a spill is discovered later, a quick damp wipe takes care of it. We like Indian cooking so we sometimes are using spices such as tumeric that can stain some surfaces but that hasn't been a problem with our granite. We do have one of the low porosity stones, but higher porosity stones can be dealt with by sealing. Budgets are important and laminate is a good kitchen surface - I would much prefer it over my kitchen's previous 70's bumpy tile with wide grout - I'm not knocking laminate which is a good solution that is easier on the budget than granite. But, where it fits the budget, granite can have some functionality advantages....See MoreCountertop overhang with Ikea cabinets (how to support)
Comments (18)"Does "triangulation" mean having a third side to the bracket?" Yes. A piece is welded between the 90 degree sides. "How do you shim them back to flush? On the top?" Yes. Some plastic laminate ripped to width would be perfect; it's non-compressive. "I'm not sure I understand "through bolt the tubes". Does that just mean we would drill holes through the tubes and bolt them to the cabinets?" Yes....See MoreNeed Help picking a Ikea Cabinets and countertop. Please help.
Comments (22)I agree - love the floor but I think I would go with something simpler. I would look at different countertops, too. I know people (like someone above) always say that keeping things a darker single color makes a small space look bigger, but that's never my experience! I always think an all white space looks the biggest! So I'd do the white shaker cabs with maybe a white countertop and backsplash. We've purchased the pure white quartz from ikea, as well as the pure white acrylic (corian) and both look great and modern. If you think this house might appeal to some artsy hipster types, I also like the Marsta door which channels a midcentury vibe. It is on supersale right now. The space is small so I'd bring in interest with hardware and a lighting fixture....See MoreRiver Surf
