Good for him!

I still say the Dems. have an embarrassment of riches in their candidates for president. Just about any of them would be an improvement over Trump--and I only omit a couple from that category because, at present, I know nothing about them.

Buttigieg was my pick from the get go (if I were voting dem). He seems more normal than the rest. Biden is absent minded and Warren would not only destroy the economy...she is just so annoying.

Kate, many Dems have said that for some time now. I think it time they hone in on who is "rich" from a candidate perspective, before this election gets away from them altogether. I actually think the inability for any one of the candidates to capture a commanding lead is because there never was even close to an embarrassment of riches, but you and I certainly disagree on that point.

Mayor Pete has always been my favorite among the Dems with Bernie as a second. I heard Buttigieg speak twice on 2 different TV programs Sunday, and that only confirmed my impression. I love his intelligence, his calm, and his practicality. In the debates he has shown that he also has the fire and energy of a Bernie. I wish he were a bit older but as it is, I would far rather see him as POTUS than Biden or even Warren.

Woodnymph, you mentioned Bernie. I don't agree with any of his policy, but I certainly well understand his loyal support. I have always thought he would have won in 2016, had he been given the chance. Of course, we'll never know the answer to that.

I'll also say Pete's recent debate performance was one of the best of the group - which I imagine accounts for this pop to some extent.

Pete is working directly with Zuckerberg.... not very smart, is he?

"Facebook Inc.
chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg has privately recommended
several potential hires to Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign, a
rare example of direct political involvement from one of tech’s most
powerful executives.

Earlier this year, Zuckerberg sent multiple emails to Mike Schmuhl,
Buttigieg’s campaign manager, with names of individuals that he might
consider hiring, campaign spokesman Chris Meagher confirmed. Priscilla
Chan, Zuckerberg’s wife, also sent multiple emails to Schmuhl with staff
recommendations. Ultimately, two of the people recommended were hired.
The emails between Zuckerberg and Buttigieg have come to
light as Zuckerberg faces unrelenting attacks from politicians from both
parties over such issues as misinformation, privacy, election meddling
and bias. Zuckerberg is scheduled to testify Wednesday before the House Financial Services Committee on Facebook’s impact on the financial services and housing sectors."

Ann, I think had it not been for the Clinton "name" Bernie might well have won. I went one of his rallies here and was amazed and pleased at the diversity of the audience cheering him on: college students, Hispanics, Baby Boomers, Blacks --- in short, folks from all backgrounds and walks of life. His energy and sincerity are contagious. I like that he does not mince words. I far prefer his persona to that of a Hillary.

The Zuckerberg contribution to his campaign is very problematic.

Buttigieg is a great candidate - for the Republican Party.

Althea, he does not have the conservative views of the Repub. party. Far from it. He just happens to be a pragmatic, moderate Dem. As is Klobuchar. Not every Dem is a firebrand such as Ocasio-Cortaz or Bernie.

Back in 2004, I told my husband if this new guy Obama ever ran, I was all in. I saw him deliver a speech at the democratic convention. I never looked at anyone else , and worked for him for eight-years. The minute I saw Pete B as I have never heard of him, I said to my husband, this is my guy now. He had such a low recognition factor going for him but when he spoke, it was so refreshing and intelligent. He has a calm, serious, quiet, demeanor not given to slandering rivals and his intelligence is just amazing. I'll go out on a limb and say he's the smartest candidate running. He is only a few years younger than JFK and since when is age a factor since we have four septuagenarians running two who will soon be 80?

lily, I could have written your post, word for word. I have been saying from day one that Mayor Pete is the smartest candidate running. Also, I have remarked that his calm demeanor reminds me of Obama. He is presidential and has the qualities of a statesman, despite his young age. And I was a JFK supporter, back in the day.

Woodnymph, Buttigieg does hold right wing views as does Amy K.. There is no question. I liked him at first, but that changed after listening to his town hall on CNN back in Feb. He has done a 180 on medical care, having gone from full throated support for M4A to fake M4A. He is fairly transparent.

Maybe it was only last week or the week before he was defending Facebook against Warren's call to have it broken up. The he went on to attack her repeatedly during the debate.

I don't think you can realistically compare anyone to Bernie. Not because of the "firebrand" quality, but because of lifelong integrity.

I agree with jerzeegirl.

However, the colossal failings of GW Bush -- Iraq war and financial system on the brink of collapse -- elected B Obama, something previously thought impossible.

Who knows what the future will bring as far as the economy -- possible recession, wild swings in the stock market -- and a president who may or may not be judged fully competent by the public.

Honestly, I'd be far more comfortable with Buttigieg being in the White House as President than I would with his husband being in the White House as First Man (I guess that's what he'd be called). That would definitely take some getting used to - along with the two of them dancing on inauguration night, walking hand in hand to the helicopter, greeting presidents and spouses from other countries, showing tours of the White House at Christmas, etc. Their choices are up to them and I both accept and respect that, but after living a whole life of seeing a president and first lady - it would take me some time to adjust.

Guess Trump having Melania appearing at his side, kising her, Melania introducing him at events, etc isn't flaunting.

In appears that in the photo Buttigieg is kissing his husband on the cheek — and that gets some conservatives hot and bothered?

At least Buttigieg‘s husband hasn’t been posing for soft porn, and we’re looking at only one marriage.

"Flaunting"? Huh? What does flaunting have to do with either situation?

I'm simply used to seeing a president, in those various situations, with his wife. Again, it would take me time to adjust to the different visual, just as the picture catkin posted kind of catches me off guard. When I listen to Mayor Pete in an interview, that visual doesn't come to mind.

Kissing your spouse on the cheek in public is flaunting it, apparently. Coincidentally, just before seeing the post of that rather sweet picture, I was thinking, as far as I've seen from far away, that Buttigeig had succeeded in presenting his marriage and sexual orientation in a very normal and normalising way. I don't think if he were heterosexual and his spouse were a woman you would have seen less of her.

I'm sure my parents and grandparents would have cringed at the sight of two men kissing but today's society is more enlightened. But there will always be small-minded people who will support a man who has been married multiple times with many mistresses and porn stars. Pete and Zuckerberg attended Harvard at the same time and Pete was good friends with Zuck's roommates but didn't know him till years later. He was however a very early Facebook member...like 235 I guess while he was still at Harvard. I'm just impressed with his intellect, his grasp of subjects and his calm demeanor.

Yeah, I don't see it as flaunting. I, too, think he's presenting it in a normal way, but it's certainly not been the norm in our presidential history, so it catches me off guard to see it. It's a lot different seeing that pictures vs seeing him being interviewed by Wallace.

Ziemia, I don't care who mentioned it or how many times (I just checked and it had been used 3 times before I mentioned it). I don't think "flaunting" is the right word for kissing one's spouse (male or female) and certainly not for associating with Zuckerberg. So, I very clearly expressed my disagreement with the entire "flaunting" topic.

I like Bootie (also my brother's nickname) and will vote for him in a heartbeat. Like other posters stated above he may have problems with my old curmudgeon contemporaries, but they're most likely already in camp trump anyways. If he is the demo candidate it will be interesting to see how trump handles him via his usual barrage of insults, name calling, and slanderous attacks. So far trump has only called him Alfred E. Neuman.

I didn't feel lumped in (or not) with anyone. I was simply expressing my own opinion on the topic. I don't care if the left or the right agrees or disagrees. To me, it would be weird. Pete alone is one thing and I never give it a thought. Pete with his partner (especially kissing or showing physical affection to one another) brings an entirely different context to Pete and is unsettling to me. I might guess some other heterosexual individuals might potentially feel the same.

I know my general election vote will go to Trump, but I'll also vote in the Dem primary. If my choices were Biden, Warren, Buttigieg, and Sanders - my vote would most definitely go to either Biden or Buttigieg and more than likely to Buttigieg. But, I'd wait to get a clearer picture of the differences between their policy plans.
