What is your property size compared to your garden size?
Comments (58)Wow, I never expected this thread to go so long! We are now officially in the new house, and I'm glad I stuck to my inclination to get the larger lot. Our dogs looked SOOOO happy running around in that big backyard when we arrived yesterday. Because of the septic field, there are some limits on what I can garden (I know some people garden over septic fields, but I would rather avoid it if I have alternatives), but I plan to interplant the grass over the septic field with things that are yummy grazing for chickens. It's a bit overwhelming just thinking of where to get started. All those cottonwoods in the back need to be thinned, and the whole area cleaned up and mulched with compost, and there's lots of landscaping to do before the fruit trees go in. ALL of the sod in the front yard needs to come up, but it looks to be a rhizomatous grass, so THAT is easier said than done. I'm planning on a native, waterwise garden for the front half of the front yard, then cordoned grapes to form a low fence, with kitchen garden with perennial flowers, herbs and maybe some currants, kiwis and hops between the grapes and the backyard fence. I'm just glad there's some ready-made beds to grow the basic veggies in this year, because I have about 10 years of work ahead to do everything I am envisioning!...See MoreDo you have wild parrots in your area?
Comments (42)Carl Hiaasen wrote Hoot, a young adult novel about those burrowing owls in SE Florida. They made it a movie, too, but I didn't see it. I did read the book with my 12 y/o. (Hey, you're never too old for mom to read to you!) Kids work together to save an area of nests about to be destroyed by developers. It's very funny, he uses wit and irony to tell the story (and a few 4-letter words, FYI). Great for kids 12+ with an interest in environmental causes, and a sharp sense of humor. Good contemporary YA books. The characters and situations appeal even to kids who don't love to read (like my DS). They are "real" and have their dysfunctions. But they are motivated by a strong sense of right and wrong. Sorry, I took a tangent there. I do that when I've had coffee too late in the evening (and other time, too)....See MoreWould you prune your neighbor's trees branches off your property?
Comments (69)We talked to 4 lawyers today, and they ALL said his lawsuit would be considered frivolous, and that his case would be thrown out. And none of them believe he will actually go through with suing us. One of them called the xmas guy an idiot for even considering suing. One lawyer said our case would be a "simple" matter to handle, only one day of work @ $750. I talked to him at length. Basically, he would say to dismiss the case against us since we made an agreement with the property owner, and if the son had any theoretical agreement it would only be with his parents. But I know this guy, and I have no doubt he will still sue us. We bought security cameras last night. They're expensive! Holy cow! Xmas guy was outside and walked to the property's edge and made a spectacle of himself watching dh put the backyard camera up. If he was trying to intimidate dh it did not work. Xmas guy also came over this morning and measured the tree trunks of only 5 trees, because the other trees are totally on our property. He didn't measure the tree lengths which I found surprising. He did take pictures. We just barely missed him, as we were outside 20 minutes before him measuring the lengths of the trees and taking more pics. We screen-grabbed his facebook page; he sells them for $6 a foot. 2 of the trees we cut were only 3.5ft tall! The others were around 7-8ft. What does he think he's going to get? Even if we pretend he's the property owner, then we would at least be entitled to half the value of the trees since 50% of each of the trunks was on our land. He would get less than $100 total. He'd be a schmuck for suing. One last thing, I talked to the building inspector this morning and he said xmas guy called him late last night (Sunday!) and screamed at him, and that he had to listen to xmas guy even though he was out of town visiting family. He said xmas guy doesn't have a case and not to worry. That's all I can update for now. Thank you for "listening". It means a lot. I was up all night last night worrying about being sued....See MoreDo you have grocey pick up in your area?
Comments (43)Instacart is the same company that Kroger uses. I think also perhaps Vitacost does too, because I have noticed that they carry the same products (Simple Truth, for example, which I thought was a Kroger exclusive brand) at the same price. I was about to mention that Aldi is starting home delivery -- that is in addition to our other major chains (Kroger, Meijer, Big Bear, Target, Walmart). Several of those also have curbside pickup. My daughter used the Meijer home delivery regularly and has been very pleased. She tells me that the shopper will contact her to approve a substitution if possible, and she has also gotten some good sale prices that weren't available in store (a bargain price for lamb, and low price for strawberries, for examples) I've used the curbside pickup at Kroger twice, because it was free and they had coupon offers for using it that I wanted to take advantage of. It is not something that I will pay $5 to use. Only problems -- I try to use digital coupons and promotions for my purchases whenever possible, and both times I've ordered, they substituted items that didn't qualify for the promotion or coupon. The first time they were sold out of a 2# package and substituted two 12 oz. packages instead, for the same (regular) price as 2#, plus I lost the sale price and coupon for the larger package. The order picker did not know that a pound = 16 ounces. This they made right. The second time I was buying items for a "buy 5 save $5" promotion, and forgot to specify to only substitute with a qualifying item -- so when the particular "flavor" of laundry detergent I had picked was sold out in the promotion size, they substituted the same "flavor" in a larger size --again I lost the value of the promotion ($5) and also a $3 coupon. Lesson learned -- I need be very specific in the comments about what substitutions are acceptable....See MoreHU-435404624
