Comments (42)Carl Hiaasen wrote Hoot, a young adult novel about those burrowing owls in SE Florida. They made it a movie, too, but I didn't see it. I did read the book with my 12 y/o. (Hey, you're never too old for mom to read to you!) Kids work together to save an area of nests about to be destroyed by developers. It's very funny, he uses wit and irony to tell the story (and a few 4-letter words, FYI). Great for kids 12+ with an interest in environmental causes, and a sharp sense of humor. Good contemporary YA books. The characters and situations appeal even to kids who don't love to read (like my DS). They are "real" and have their dysfunctions. But they are motivated by a strong sense of right and wrong. Sorry, I took a tangent there. I do that when I've had coffee too late in the evening (and other time, too)....See MoreWhat is the oldest tree on your property?
Comments (179)Mike, I guess if you live in an area where raking is needed or expected a Pin oak would be a pain, but, I am in the country and don't rake anything, just mow them. I actually go to the leaf dump and bag leaves and collect them to add to my Compost Tumblers, I have 2 of them. I also will spread leaves among my shade plants that I've collected from the leaf dump. Shade plants love that. It's great paired with shredded bark or wood spread under them. Nicholsworth, I love your yard, you are likely not needing much AC in summer with that shaded yard. My Pin oak has just gotten big enough to shade our AC unit within the last few years. BUT, I can't plant a tree too close on the South side of the house because of the septic tank lines being there, plus, I want to eventually put a greenhouse there. Kenswoods, there was another recent post on GW about a Cucumber tree, MAYBE that meant Cucumber Magnolia ? The tree that was pictured was a HUGE tree that really looked like an oak. It was said to be 300 year old Cucumber tree. I am thinking it MUST'VE been a 300 year old Cucumber Magnolia (?) It was really an impressive tree with great form, very "oaklike" to me. I will never rake leaves from under my trees, BUT, MANY people kinda HAVE to in cities....See MoreFluff post of sorts: Do you “Google Earth” your own property?
Comments (41)Iris...last night I was up to really late doing this. I had done it years ago but forgot so did my house and found that it featured the whole length of the side and very little of the front. It's on a corner lot on three city lots The side street view was about three years old because my neighbor's house was for sale and our picket fence needed to be repaired. So the camera went up the alley behind my house. When it went to the main street it passed my house with two flags hanging out front..one on the porch and one on a pole. So this shot was three years ago because I took the one flag down. However, when I put the arrow down the street, there was only one flag and a historical plaque which was put in front of the house less than a year ago. So weird. I went to my childhood home which was a lovely 1850 clapboard house with dark green louvered shutters. Now it a big ugly white aluminum box. I went to my parents' house where the other half of my childhood was spent and it's not looking nearly as nice as when the parents had it. But the house I really wanted to see was first house we owned when we were in our early 20's and had babies. I can't get on the street. When I type in the address it goes to the street where there is a sign for my street but it won't let you go down it. I can see the stone chimney from the other street and that's it. Disappointing....See MoreDo you unplug your tree when you leave the house if you have pets?
Comments (26)Over 50 years ago, my parents had a cat. Every Christmas, we would find Mehitabel (yes, named for the famous cat in the book, Archie and Mehitabel) sitting on a sturdy branch, right up against the trunk of the tree, staring at us like the Cheshire cat. Now this was a tree with that old-fashioned tinsel put on it, lovingly one or two pieces at a time (it took forever!), and not one strand was out of place. We never saw Mehitabel get up in the tree, nor did we ever witness her descent. She looked quite lovely with her eyes "glowing" from the tree lights! She was quite a character. None of our cats ever got up IN the tree, but they did knock it over during the night one time (nasty old-style Christmas tree stand). We tied it to something from then on and never again heard that unmistakable sound in the middle of the night....See MoreRelated Professionals
