Outdoor wood furnace possibility
Comments (0)We are building a house in the country in Iowa. The land is heavily forested so we would like to take advantage of this ready supply of wood to reduce our energy costs and also have an alternative heat source. Our home will be all electric but we are looking into an outdoor wood furnace to augment a standard furnace if the price isn't too high. Does anyone have experience with an outdoor wood furnace? We do not mind the extra work involved and like the idea of having it outdoors. Alternatively, we are considering a wood stove but like the idea of less mess with the outdoor furnace. We would appreciate any advice if you have experience with either of these heating methods....See Moretoo much wood
Comments (10)Hi Faye, I have dark stained alder wood cabs also. I used them on the perimeter cabs only, with ivory/glazed cabs on the interior. I've had many compliments on the combination. I didn't want the kitchen to be too dark OR too light. I have dark hand scraped floors, and all my furniture is medium to dark wood. As for the interior doors/trim, it's 3 shades darker than the warm tan walls, and I love it! I didn't want white trim/doors since I tend to think of it as 'colonial', but that's just me since it seems to be the norm with older homes as well as new builds. I've thought of replacing w/dark stained doors, which I think would also be pretty with the trim color. I'm not a fan of white trim w/stained doors, again, just my taste. I know it's not easy making decisions. ;o)...See MoreNeed a sanity check/opinion
Comments (12)I agree with all of the above. I find it very troubling that the draftsman/designer told the new builder anything about you. As said above, that was very unprofessional. Not only did you do the right thing, it is your duty to do your own due diligence on anyone you are planning to hire - whether it is to build a home, design a home, or do any type of work for you. It would be far worse to find yourself in the middle of construction with a major issue with the builder and no recourse. One more hint for you: don't sign any builders contract without your own attorney reviewing it first - there are bound to be areas in the contract that you need to clarify or modify before signing....See MoreSand Mountain House Floor Plan Advice
Comments (23)Heather, I really love your ideas about the master bedroom. I really didn't think about my master door going outside right onto the patio where we will have family. We have a small family and liked the idea of being able to go outside from our master (maybe to a hot tub way down the road) but I'm not sure I will like that going right to the common patio. I love the fireplace idea! Our first builder talked us out of it in our current house, but I really wish we would of. Thank you for the reminder! Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of commonality between the laundry and the mudroom. Lots of discussion on how to separate the laundry from the pantry, mudroom, etc. I really don't have an answer for that one. Definitely difficult. We are sort of stuck having the back face east. Our lot is more narrow than deep. But our current home faces the same direction and our summer guests usually appreciate that we have lots of shade from the house in the backyard. We have really hot summers but we still get lots of sunlight in from the back of the house in the other seasons. Thank you so much for all you input. :)...See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
