Converting pantry space into "mud room"?

We just bought an older house and are ready to remodel. One thing we don't have and won't get is a mud room. Basically we walk in from the garage immediately into the living room which connects to the kitchen. We'd like to turn the existing pantry into a "mud room" or drop zone. The cabinets directly across from the current pantry will become the new pantry. The thought behind this is the current pantry space is basically out of sight from the rest of the house, so even with shoes, dog leashes, etc, you can really only view it if you're standing directly in front of it.

How many inches is avail for the new pantry. If you have some width avail I would insert some counter with cabinet or cubby hole below ( void door) because I don't see a place to set anything. the assembly w hooks and low bench is nice but behind that is a good spot for an added function. It boils down to how much pantry space you really need and can that be determined? You also have 4 ft 10 in to left of patio door . That can be quite a few things behind doors unless you have plans for it.

I am just now reading all these amazing comments. We were going to sell our 5 bedroom house and build a “smaller” 2B2B barndominium, but plans changed due to my dad getting sick and not wanting us to move away from me. So we have decided to renovate what we have and incorporate the things I wanted into this house but I have no clue where to start. This house had NO storage. Convert Pantry closet into Mud room

Hey I need some assistance. I want to convert our pantry closet that is right at the entrance to our house from the garage into a mud area. I have attached a video as to what the wall looks like. I am trying to figure out if its a load bearing wall or not. I want to knock down the entire wall. I am hesitant to knock it down before I know if it is a load bearing wall. Is there any easy way to figure this out? The question would be how can I find out if this is a load bearing wall or not. (Photos attached) Side note - the door on the left of the closet leads into the garage. The front facing closet wall does not extent into the garage or the washing room on the right. If you mean configuring the laundry and powder room into the utility room space, then a remodeling contractor should be able to help you with placement/code or maybe other ideas. I think, in an ideal world, we could all have all the space we need for all the elements in a house we want. But I'd rather have a powder/laundry combo, if I've determined that I need another 1/2 bath, rather than make do with one less bath than my family needs because some people object to having a W/D in proximity to a toilet, or whatever it is they object to. If you can squeeze enough space, I like the kinds of doors that pull out and tuck into the sides of the WD to hide it if you feel the need. I had both of these pics saved when I was trying to figure out how to move my w/d from a too small for today's large W/D units laundry room to my main floor bath. The first one is a bit hard to see but the doors slide/tuck in beside the machines.

Wonderful house! what about making your DR work much harder? I think you could run tall storage along the wall where the low buffett is pictured - it has the advantage of being pretty well hidden from the door and you could use that whole wall/corner (you could get gorgeous armoires or freestanding custom cabinetry for a fraction of what a potential reno would cost) - not sure what your current furniture is in the room, but there’s no rule that says the table has to always be centered, you could always offset it a bit if you needed more elbow room for storage you could also replace two dining room chairs with a bench so it’s easy to plop down and change shoes I live in an old house and I love her but sometimes it’s challenging to make the traditional layout work for a busy family

@herbflavor We're kind of limited with the space inside the current pantry since the back of it is the staircase. We were thinking of turning the existing bump out into the bench seat. The *new* pantry across from this mud room/drop zone will be 3' wide by 6' tall. But I agree, we need somewhere to set things down and there's a lot of empty space between the proposed bench seat and the hooks in the picture.

I love this mud room/drop zone idea! If you still need a place to set things down, what about lowering the hooks 9-12" and placing a shelf above? You could even have the hooks connected to the bottom of the shelf. See pictures below!
