Curtains and Blinds in Austin

Hello!! I recently moved to Austin and we are about to close a new construction house. This is our first house and Austin is a new place for us. I need suggestions on where to buy good drapes/curtains and blinds at a reasonable price. I plan to use drapes in common areas and master bedroom, blinds in secondary rooms.

Hey Meghana! You can usually find some nice curtain options at HomeGoods. Try to find rod pocket panel that way they look more expensive. For affordable blinds, I would try Lowe's/Home Depot. Hope this helps!

As a rather recent arrival to the hot Texas weather here is what we did. All our windows received the cellular light blocking Levelor shades from Lowes. You measure and they cut so they look nice. We did a light filtering cellular shade for a transom window. Then we added thermal drapes in every room using decorative rods. They aren't always closed but are a real benefit when needed. Our house was a new build so it had the most energy efficient windows, insulation and AC unit available. I am happy to say the coverings have provided comfort and very reasonable electric bills.

This question frequently comes up. It is such a personal decision based on whether or not you need heat/light/privacy control. Do you open your windows? Do you want to see your view? What kind of look do you prefer? I do not use any shades that can be seen during the day. They come down in the bathrooms after dark. I greatly dislike shades that cover the windows 24/7. How do your window treatments look from the outside? I always prefer curtains or shutters because I like that look. Dark blinds or shades create a cave-like feeling. Do you want light/bright interiors?

Window treatments, whether hard treatments or soft , should be selected in conjunction with your decorating style. You need not select this now, unless you are convinced you want something hardwired and motorized. There are great "temporary" solutions that could look good and last at least a year or more after a move in. Windows facing street and especially ground level are best with same treatment...: ) or one that will appear same from street view. In the wait for permanent? .......Go to Home Depot for cordless cellular shades and cut to fit widths, inside or outside mount, right in the store: ) They're fabulous. I often leave them as permanent under curtain panels, especially in kids rooms, guest bedrooms. Translucent privacy, blackout, even top down bottom up! You might spend a grand on the entire 13 windows.....but you will have bought yourself a lot of time, and might decide these ARE forever in more than a few rooms. Point is, don't rush window treatments, and avoid blinds. UGH.

Mount the rod on the walls so that you can draw the curtains completely off the doors. Otherwise, you'll be flapping the curtains out of the way every time you go in or out. Vertical blinds can take up far less room than curtains. They come in many fabrics, not just vinyl.

Lovely bathroom! I’m in total agreement on cafe curtains or cafe shutters (vintage style). I think either would look great in there. So charming! This one has window film above with shutters below: Yours could be stained, off-white, or a color from your wallpaper (green would look great). Do you have an Ikea nearby? I have used the Aina linen curtains to the floor placed on one of their black metal rods. They hang beautifully and look classic. The prices are extremely budget friendly and easy to install. Just make sure to buy the rod, the brackets and the larger circular rings. I've used these in my mountain home and also a rental home and they look lovely.

If you also like blinds, and like a natural blind such as a bamboo roll up look, lowe's has a 40% sale right now on all brands. I'm placing an order today! All the best!
