I haven't purchased anything, and didn't even look terribly hard at the options. I was just walking down the curtain aisle and noticed 3 different curtains that would work for me. I had my 2 little ones with me, so such serious decisions will require a return trip. But Lowe's is far enough away that when I go, I'll be making a purchase. The current window treatments are all the same: 2 ivory panels on either side of each window. We just bought the house like that, and they were unoffensive enough to leave them alone for the past 3 years. Here's an example: The blinds, panels, and rods will be going away and I think I'll be getting a single dark rod to run over both windows and will have 4 panels, with 2 taking up more space on the middle wall. My neighbor, on the other hand, with the same floor plan and pretty much the same dark leather furniture has valances and roman shades in this room. I feel like panels would be more dramatic. Glad to know I can get different window treatments compared to the other rooms. This room, then, will probably get some solid panels in either gold or olive. Haven't painted yet, but have been deliberating over gold vs. olive. I was hoping my curtain choice would make my wall color choice clearer.

It certainly looks much more pleasing to the eyes when it does, but it's not always practical from the interior to do so. That's why I was more than pleased when we added solar screens to all the windows in our home. You can't see through them unless you nose is pressed to them during the day, and only shadows at night. With your style of home on the formal side I believe it would look much better if all matched at least in color. As all white or off white, all wood tone. Just my opinion though.

I agree that the front windows should be pretty similar. I am old and have trouble thinking of blinds/shades as window treatments, especially when they look like paper bags or projector screens. They should serve a purpose for light control or privacy, but almost always look better with curtains. Particularly disconcerting are brown blinds. I prefer my home to be light and bright. White blinds/shades can work if they are softened with curtains. Take a walk through some neighborhoods and look at the window treatments. How do they look? Do you see any that you like? You might get some ideas.

A photo of the house would help, but my own choice would be for the windows to have the same treatments if they're large and close together...same size, too? We have plantation shutters throughout our house and I do like the continuity from the outside. That being said, I've seen it work nicely with different treatments if they're at least the same color. It's just that your description makes me think the same treatments would be best. Not a pro...just my own preference.
