House pics -please help choose shutter color!
Comments (11)I understand your concern, but I think you'll find that it will look far less plain once your landscaping is in. New houses always seem a bit stark at first, especially if they're not in a wooded lot, because the area around them gets scalped by the construction. I think it's the bareness of the landscape that makes the house read as "naked," not the house itself. I like the shutters on the garage windows, but I don't like them on the dormers. I may be biased in that I grew up in an area of old (for the US, that is!) houses, and there were never shutters on dormer windows. It just somehow doesn't look right to me. I think it would be fine to have shutters on the garage windows only. Visually, the other windows are served by the porch and dormer eaves, so they don't seem to need framing in the same way....See MoreNeed Help with Exterior Shutter Color Please!
Comments (21)Do not paint the shutters red! It would give you too much of a red checker-board look or the old rural farm house look where every roof and piece of trim is painted red. I don't mean that in a bad way, because I love that look - sometimes - in the right setting. Your house has an older, established country estate look with the beautiful grounds and surroundings. I like the darker look of the shutters, but on my monitor, I can't tell what color they are - are they black, brown, charcoal, the color of the roof??? If the red door works for you, I would add lots of red in your landscaping. I can pots of red geraniums on your steps and big colorful pots of flowers flanking the doors. You have a beautiful home....See MoreNeed help with exterior - door and shutter colors
Comments (9)Actually, the windows aren't the right style/size for shutters, especially the lower left window. Even decorative shutters should be sized right. That means each shutter should be half the window's width. Hard to do on double windows without it looking odd. You could get by with it on the upper windows with wider shutters, but I'd go with just a nice, wide trim.
