I will add: Camphor Tree, if you have enough space, the roots can be expansive. The leaves smell aromatic. This can be a big tree and should not be planted too close to the house or sidewalks. Pepper Tree Spanish Cork Oak, they are drought tolerant and don't get too big, and have amazing squishy bark, this is where cork stoppers on wine bottles come from. Pomegranate grows exceptionally well in this climate. Even if you don't like eating them the fruits can be very decorative hanging from the tree, and the tree also produces pretty fiery orange blossoms. Pomegranate usually grows more like a giant bush-tree though, not really the best for shade. A lot of people have never tried a truly fresh pomegranate right off the tree, they taste much much better when really fresh. And a lot of people do not know the proper technique for cutting open a pomegranate and removing the arils, so they wrongly think eating pomegranate is too much work and too messy. When it comes to Mulberry trees, Persian Black is by far the best tasting variety. However, if you're in climate zone 10 Pakistan Mulberry will grow better and is also a good tasting variety, with larger fruit size too. If you go with a fruitless male Mulberry (as some people do to avoid all the messy berries falling), there could be pollen allergy issues (if not you, someone else in the neighborhood). The Black varieties are the best tasting, but the black berries can make a mess on the ground and stain the sidewalk, or get tracked indoors on your shoes on the carpet, so that's something that should be considered. Another little fact, mulberry leaves are not poisonous and can be fed to pigs or goats, a favorite food of silkworms too. Mulberry trees have beautiful shade foliage. Ylang ylang does get really big which is why I gave mine away as I did not have the space. You may want to try the ylang ylang vine (artabotrys hexapetalus) instead it has a melon banana fragrance and is more manageable. Michelia alba is a must and it does very well here, doesn't get too big if you put it in a pot. I would also add to your list chinese perfume plant (aglaia odorata) - this is a must!, poet's jasmine, yesterday today tomorrow (brunfelsia), stephanotis and sweet pea. I love gardenias but the only one that thrives here is the grafted tree gardenia. I have First Love gardenia in tree from that I got from Monrovia you can check you local Armstrong nursery if they have them in stock if not they can order it for you.

These were 4' tall, pretty healthy trees last Spring, so I imagine they are still pretty young. We'll try again (since the trial one was a bit sour) in a couple weeks. I love spacing the varieties for lots of fruit. Our navel was amazing this year, and we wish it was bigger with more fruit. Valencias take their time to ripen (our plain old Valencia is still not ripe), and I'm hoping the two Midnight Valencias will bear in a different month than the Moros. Thanks for the info! "Best" is of course highly subjective. A couple of ideas off the top of my head: Geraldton wax flower, Chamlaucium uncinatum Australian tea tree, Leptospermum - several species. Named varieties will tend to be smaller. Carefully research mature height before purchase. I think of these as shrubs, but the "airy" description and ultimate height suit your needs. Both will tolerate dry periods once established. Water weekly after planting for 2 years or until plant is well established. These will do best in full sun. Alternatively, if you prefer something more vertical with a bare trunk and foliage up top, I can recommend specific palms if you describe your climate in greater detail. Coastal, inland, fog, dry, cool winter? What is your garden style?
