Comments (8)D. aliciae does better on the tray method when you water over them. It flushes the pots and removes mineral salts. Aside from this stomach virus thing, the Met regulars are slowly returning to the lineup. The really do have an excellent team... except for the fielding. Oh... and can somebody get me some real pizza?!...See MoreHoyas Better Outside?
Comments (11)My hoyas have mostly all lived outside, but in varying states of light and comfort. A year ago I moved and acquired a large tree which has an umbrella shape, and numerous branches just perfect for hanging plants. I brought all the hoyas over here, and hung them in the tree. They did sunburn in Fall, from changing sun angles, and some sunburned when hung in the tree. That was really strange as they had been growing on a West facing balcony wiht no relief from sun, wind or anything else. Makes my brain hurt that they could get burnt hanging in a tree, getting less sun then they ever did. Two of my hoyas bloomed for the first time ever, after receiving the more generous light under that tree. At this moment, I have two hoyas blooming their fool heads off, and two hoyas setting buds. I fully attribute this to more light, more water, and Elanors VF-11 fertilizer. My carnosa KQ is now putting on fresh growth that looks better than any it has grown in the five years I've had it. As soon as all 7 peduncles bloom, its getting chopped up, and the fresh growth cultivated on. It scarred and has many deformed leaves from sunburn, and not-great care. Since my hoyas hang in a tree, there are not many pests that move in. I did have a huge hatch of caterpillar eggs, but I caught them, and sprayed. Mealies will be a fight to the death (theirs or mine, whichever comes first) as it is the State Insect... I highly recommend it to anyone who can provide good care, and some shade. Misting is great 'out there' also....See MoreWhen/how to Shift Key Lime From Full Sun Inside to Full Sun Outside
Comments (11)Most of my citrus get only about 4 to 6 hours of sun in summer. I don't usually have them in full all-day sun. They seem to grow better in pots for me this way. For my situation the pots would overheat too much in all-day full sun. And I've never had a problem with blooming and fruit production. Usually they start blooming before I even set them out. I start them out in shade in spring and gradually -- over a period of 3 weeks -- move them to more sun. I do this because usually they have a lot of tender new growth before I even set them out. Actually toward September/October I do move them to as sunny and protected spot as possible because I want to make the most of the shorter and cooler days. Also want fruit to ripen....See MoreAre your tree still outside? Or are they inside for the winter now?
Comments (80)Hey Laura, thank you! I hated SO MUCH to break down the plastic sheeting over the rods I made as a temporary greenhouse almost like a hoop one made of P.C pipes...The sun would create heat in that green house and send all the fragrance of the flowers into the open door to that tent right into my home every day...Like hot air filling my house with sweet smells. I will, miss that. The worst part as Sammers said was bringing them in. I don't worry about them outside even when it's cold, but I worry about the inside with no bright open skies....Ugh Calamondindave, I thank you so much. It is just like that! I will miss it for sure. I HATE winter! I was thinking, why don't you make like a hoop greenhouse from P.V pipes like I did right up against the warm side of your home? You made never have to bring them inside even in cold nights..Just use a little space heater!...See MoreMeyermike(Zone 6a Ma.)
